Righto. Fitting new steel fork to my On-One Inbred 29er for touring/bikepacking.
The Inbred is designed around 100mm fork. Surly's got a couple of options:
- Ogre fork, apparently 80mm corrected, axle-crown 268mm
- Krampus fork, no mention on suspension correction but axle-crown is 283mm
Krampus is 15mm longer than Ogre, so is the Krampus effectively a 95mm-corrected fork, or will my frame snap at the headtube as soon as I fit it? Will be used mainly on gravel roads, dirt paths, and easy singletrack with Midge bars and some load.
Surly also do the ECR fork. It's identical to the Ogre, except that offset is 47mm instead of 42mm, which'll reduce the trail. The Krampus fork also has 47mm offset. Head angle is 70 degrees with Ogre/ECR and 69 degrees with Krampus.
Anyone got any experience in this area?

Fargo forks are 100mm corrected (check frame tech on Fargo bike page for confirmation)

Mine had a kona unit fork, it was great.

I'd go with the 468mm length of either the Ogre or Fargo fork. The main differences between those two are the Ogre fork is 43mm rake and the Fargo has 45mm. Also the fargo ( Cromoto ) fork is said to have a more comfortable feel to it ( the Ogre fork is very stiff ). They both have the anything cage mounts, which you'd find very useful for bikepacking.
The inbred already has a higher BB than the Ogre, so I wouldn't want to fit a longer fork and raise it even higher, especially if loading up the bike for touring. Seeing as the inbred has a 71° head angle, rather than the Ogre's 72°, you can choose by deciding how much trail you want.
Compare it to a few others out there ( if you haven't already ) on here.

I've seen references for that ^ older Kona P2 29er fork as anywhere between 465-470mm a-c and between 45-47mm rake.

get the shorter option <70 degree HTA is just too low for anything but downhill.

This confirms my suspicion that i'm now on everybody's ignore list :-( -

I already knew the answer, I was just flaming at the absurdity of claiming equivalence between a fixed-length fork and an unspecified telescopic fork under unspecified load.

After checking On-One website it seems I got the geo incorrect - HTA is 71 degrees with 470mm a-c fork.
This link is very useful, thanks. It seems the ECR fork will give 78mm trail, the Ogre 83mm, and the Krampus 85mm.
All of these figures are quite high and will give a lot of wheel flop, aren't they?
I've already spoken to the Salsa importers here in NZ and they're not currently bringing in any forks.
-
• #4289
I don't think they're high enough to cause any real concern :-)
Edit - out of interest, what stem length are you planning to use?
-
• #4290
No idea on stem length. At the moment is has Ritchey carbon fork (470 a-c, 45mm rake) and 100mm -6deg. stem, but this is with 780mm flat bars set a couple of inches below saddle.
With Midge bars I think I will stick on the 100mm and see what it feels like. Too long, I suspect.

So, after all the horror stories of the easton haven 29er wheels, something has gone wrong! I bust a spoke on a longish off road ride ....luckily, I was nearly
home, so nursed it back. Getting the spokes however, is a bugger. Chain reaction have agreed to get me some under warranty though, which saves me the hassle of sending them off.....I have a good buddy who will fix em! I've changed the setup of the titec j bars a bit, putting matchmakers on to free up some space.....I am so glad I managed to pick a pair of them up at last....they are incredibly good! I might look out for some proper jones ti ones now though! -
• #4292
^ You have done a fair bit of mileage on those wheels though. Did it go madly out of true from one spoke?
-
• #4293
Not really, my mate said he could true it up without it, to get me by.... Which I didn't like the sound of! I've got the salsa original wheels on it now, shod with the beavers... While everything was getting swapped about last night, I took the opportunity to do a weight comparison.... I was shocked to find them almost identical to the havens! They do have 2.2 conti x-kings on though, which are a fair bit heavier. But still..... The havens feel so much quicker....
I'm going to fettle with the lever position and angle a bit more, then stick a picture up :0) -

Maybe the Easton wheels have lighter rims, but heavier hubs?
-
• #4295
Maybe.... Or bearings better? I dunno, but the Easton's spin up and maintain momentum for longer... I think!
But as you say, I've put lots of off road and road miles on them in the 18 months or so that I've had them.....I've changed the bearings in the front once, and will be getting the rear hub upgrade and new bearings at the same time as my pal doing the spoke/truing..... -
