  • Definitely one of those bikes that I really want, yet would probably never use.

  • Just realised edited that out when asking another question. I will eventually swap out the marlin frame. I'm thinking either the TransAm or the Honzo. The problem I have with the marlin is when something gets technical and I want to slam my post I can't because the bottle mount holes.

  • IMHO get as much travel as you can without fecking up the geometry of the bike.

Whats the axle to crown length relative to the current set-up?

  • I'll check when I get home.

It has Treks G2 geometry so its probably going to ruin it anyway but plenty of people on mtbr seem to be running non g2 forks fine with no complaints about handling.

  • I can recommend the transition trans am!

I've made a couple of changes since I last posted in this thread....I was having trouble getting it as 'fast' as I thought it should be I've decided that a few bits needed upgrading, and the riding position was too upright....first off, I flipped the stem, which is a +6 degree item, so that dropped the front a bit. I then stuck some on one fleegle pro bars on (I know they are white, but they were a fiver cheaper... You'd pick it up from the street, right? :0) ). These both make me lean forward a lot more. I have also fitted a used set of xtr m-960 cranks, which bring the weight of the whole bike down to about 30lb.... I'll weigh it when I get a chance. The difference is staggering. I can now maintain about 17-19 mph on the flat off road, and over 20mph on it, with the kind of input I'm used to on my ti 26er. I'm just trying to decide on some tyres that I'll be happy with, then I can put my new Easton haven lightweight wheelset on... I should fly then! Don't judge it on the apparent attempt at colour coordinating... It's just thrown together to get my riding position right. I've also added some old school profile bar ends, with a bit of a yip at the end, so that I can get right over the front when going quick. The handling is sharper, and it has totally transformed it. I was almost thinking that I had made the wrong choice, but my head is happier, now I have dialled it in.

  • Whooops! Just ordered also those Sun Ringle Disc Jockey hubs.
66€ for the rear and 26€ for the front hub. I could not resist at that price.
Just have to hope that I will get the front hub beacuse it's again discounted. Was stock when I ordered and pay them.

  • Planet X are great.... They have some killer deals on 29" tyres at the minute too. I just got a pair of conti X-kings for £15 each!

  • Nice! I'm still getting through the tyres that I last bought in a sale!

75% off, bought 4 of them for the price of 1, awesome!

  • ^^^ Nice one mmccarthy, is that the limited edition ss version?

    Also, what fork?

  • It is indeed!

Undecided on the fork yet, first thought was On One's carbon fork. But it's only 100g lighter than the Salsa Cromoto that I had on the Mary, which was awesome. Not 100% sure to be honest!

Actually, will probably just go for the On One fork. Mostly as I don't like having a mish-mash of different branded parts on my bikes.

  • Some Exotic carbon forks might look good on that.

  • Not that good looking bikes appeal to you of course ;-)

  • Those come from the same factory as the On One, erm, ones as far as I recall. Slightly different looks though.

    Good looking bikes repulse me!

Also, what options do people recommend when it comes to SS rear hubs?

  • I prefer the mini cassette type over the freewheel variety, for cheaper cogs & better chainline. If you've got the cash, get the Hope SS/trials hub.

Most likely. Exotics are cheaper & nicer looking though.

    Never mind :-(

That's what I have at the minute, though I can't seem to find any other ones that are just big enough to take a single sprocket. Even that Hope one takes 6. My current Pivit (Haro branded generic components from what I gather) one takes just one. Which obviously means less dishing and a stronger wheel.

  • If you look at the Dt Swiss or the Chris King ss hub, they both look the same size freehub body as the Hope.

^ Not to worry, as the Hope one does build up into a non-dished wheel. Just check with Smallfurry, he's got one on his 29er.

  • True, may end up just going for a BMX hub then. Really not a fan of a cassette full of spacers!

  • Also, who on earth pays £425 for a CK hub?!?!?!

  • My carbon frame and fork cost less than that!

BMX hub with freewheel is good if you already know what gear ratio you like. Especially with a posh freewheel like the White Industries one.

    Scary isn't it?

You paid for that thing :-D

  • On the subject of freewheels, does anyone use white industries? Currently running a shimano mx30 and the incessant 'ticking' is driving me insane. It's got steadily worse over the last six months.
I'm intrigued by the W.I. dual (17t & 19t) freewheel as currently running 33x18 which is good but sometimes fancy a few more gear inches, sometimes, admittedly, less.
I do have reservations however as I think the idea is to run two chainrings so that the axle position remains constant and the disc brake pads do not need to be adjusted. So my question; do you reckon swapping between the 17t and 19t cogs (with single chainring) would cause a large enough difference to warrant adjustment each time?

  • Especially with a posh freewheel like the White Industries one.

    Oops!

  • Ah forgot about the freewheel bit! May have to do some searching after work for some BMX-style hubs that take sprockets instead of freewheels.

Thankfully i'm not in a rush to finish this build!
