  • The SR wheels are sat on £80 with no bids right now, £160 BIN.

Does BR have a 29er section? I almost never go there.

  • No just a MTB parts section, to be honest singletrackworld is better for bargains

  • Regarding those ebay wheels... Sun make lots of rims that are OEM and they're alright.

I couldn't see hub details in that ebay listing. If they are indeed Quando then I wouldn't buy them. The ones I've used I didn't keep long enough to break. They had play in them (from new) and the freehub felt like it had about 4 engagement points. Total POC.

  • I wanted to stop this thread from disappearing, as I'd been lurking around it for some time, so....

24" Surly Ogre, found on Mtbr. Hoping to get one these ( same size ) around the end of June. Will most likely be doing a similar build to this one.
Ordered it around mid January, because Ison Distribution weren't ordering many into the country in behemoth size.

1st generation Karate Monkey x large

  • I'm hoping to be building up a nice new 29er and just wanted to mention in here before I stick it on the classifieds, but i'll be selling my 2008 Haro Mary SS frame (the one with the EBB). 18 inch frame with the Salsa Cromoto forks if any of you folks are interested or know someone who is. Will post up pictures and more details in the next few days.

  • Can't go wrong. I've had my superstars (26") for a little over a year, they rock.

  • I'm debating the merits of Stans tubeless, from a position, frankly, of near total ignorance.

I'd like to use the bike as it was intended- light XC, and having had two pinch flats over the Pave the tubeless concept appeals to me.

  • Hope Pro II ( EVO )
    MAVIC EX729

  • That's 26" Dicki

  • oops
i'll stick with my Hope Pro II Evo hubs though

Anyone running these rims that could wade in with an opinion of them versus something like the Mavic TN719?

  • I have 719s on pro 2s with ACI and newly Crests on pro2s with DTcomp - both 26" from Merlin. The Crest wheelset weighed in at 1610g with tapes. Thus far they seem strong (only about 100miles) and definately feel faster at about 50g lighter per rim. My reasoning was lighter rims where the weight loss really makes some odds teamed with stronger but very slightly heavier spokes.

The downside is that they are a pig to get new tyres on - once the tyres have stretched it's better but puncture with new tyres and these rims in the field and I think you may be walking home.

I run light tubes 'cos I don't do any technical stuff.

BTW I think Merlin nearly match Hope on wheel prices plus you get to choose exactly what you want and they are truly handbuilt. They do 29s now.

  • Merlin eh? I'll have a look, cheers.

  • I have used both but would choose the crest over the mavics just for the ease of going tubeless. Running mine tubeless and have had no issues after the initial set up with none tubless tyres.

  • and selling my 29er over in the classifieds - Singular Swift...

  • i have been using the flows on my 29er, no need for tubeless tyres and they have been great. one day in 2 years a tyre was not holding pressure, the fluid had run dry

prior to that i was getting regular punctures, so from my perspective they are great

for the commuto x bike i will not be going tubeless just because i may want to change from slicks to nobbly tyres, if i could afford a spare wheelset i would be thinking differently

  • On One Lurcher work in progress:

That looks pretty fast mmccarthy! Will you be racing it?

  • I will! Planning on taking it to a few endurance races next summer.

  • The shape of the frame has grown on me & it's a lovely colour, but that reverse rake effect fork makes me think it's been assembled in Tesco*

*No offence.... I realise it's meant to be that way :-)

  • Oof! I like the general silliness of the aesthetics i've got to admit.
