Snow!

  • SM1 - As with all others, the main roads were generally ok, although had to ride closer to the centre than normal to avoid any slush at the kerb side. Chickened out and took the mountain bike yesterday, but was back on the ss today. Got to work (about a 30 min ride) with only a couple of wheel spins, then ate it in the work car park riding down the ramp taht was covered in sheet ice!

    Fucking ditto.

9 miles Lewisham, New X, OKR, Waterloo, Euston was absolutely fine and then turned into carpark at work and remembered the little ramp up from the road a bit too late.

Turning left uphill on ice covered cobbles = fail.

  • didn't wanna fail between N16 and W14 - took the tube.

between shepherd's bush tube and my work (about 700m) i saw 4 cyclists bomb out on the south side of the green. fuck riding today!

  • side streets in streatham are fucked, hello lambeth can we have some assistance please. my road is a sheet of ice. high road, no doubt is fine. i have nowhere to go until later.

let me guess, they were leaning. right??

  • Stay upright and avoid leaning on corners to maintain control.

  • Lots of talk of [not] leaning, but none of tyre pressure. It really helps to drop the pressure to a minimum.

Tried this on my 29ers this morning, takes ages to let the air out of those things.

  • only if you're going too fast, take it easy, choose your line carefully, control your speed and snow shouldn't be a problem.

I'll bet that people in snow-covered American cities are laughing at our ineptly of riding on the snow.

Ice however. (Snow after a frost) Is impossible to navigate on a thin tyre.

Watched a couple of hybrids wipe out this morning.

Fine on my MTB. Still tried to stick to salted roads though.

  • let me guess, they were leaning. right??

well, i think that's painfully obvious.

  • stay straight people.

    homophobe.

  • let me guess, they were leaning. right??

well, i think that's painfully obvious.

might have been lack of mudguards. irresponsible if you ask me.

  • The ride was fine this morning.

A new tip to add to the anti-lean stuff is not to go near the kerb. If there's ice anywhere, it's where the car tyres haven't been... right up against the kerb.

I saw a couple of cyclists leave the centre of the road attempting to undertake and then stack it. But having stayed in the centre I didn't have any problem beyond the road outside of my home.

  • Got the tube today. Riding home last night was fine untill Kentish Town where the roads just turned to ice. Even in the middle the wheels were all over the place.

  • People are no less fucking idiotic in this weather than any other time of year. Perhaps more so. Typical example this morning.
There's some stupid cow walks straight onto the Zebra crossing in front of me while I am navigating my way down an icy hill. I shout at her well in advance 'I aint stopping love so just wait!' She decides that her lack of desire to wait 5 seconds to cross the road is more important than any potential effects slamming on my front brake my have on my being and steps out anyway. I skim past her by a couple of cm to be met with a torrent of abuse. Had to put her in her place with a volley of choice words. Fuck, even when I try and be calm and chilled there's the odd deranger fucking off my morning.

    Fuckers

  • I had difficulties north of Kentish Town this morning and last night, the roads are really icy, once you get to the bottom of Kentish Town Road it's fine. Managed not to fall off though.

  • You mean your wife works in the same building in Canary Wharf as you?

Nope. Pictures from work, laptop at home. Can't sync my blackberry at work.

  • I did say this further up the thread, I've dropped mine down quite a bit and it's really helping.

I have a question about this article. Last year the snow in London was the worst in like 40 years, but this year its the last 23 years. Surely to be accurate it should say the worst snow since last year????

Last years figure is based on memory, so i may be wrong. it also seemed worse last year.

  • global warming ...... yeah right

Outside London the snow is worse this year, inside London the snow was worse last year.

  • one really appreciates the feedback rear wheel braking on fixed provides on slippery surfaces. innit?

  • @PinkGottiMobs - did you ride yesterday? What was riding down from Highgate like?

  • I heard somebody say it was a shift in the gulf stream?

So yes. Global Warming...or Global Cooling?

The ultimate irony could be a well overdue Ice Age.

    Every 10,000 years apparently?

    read back <<<<<<<<

  • if the gulf stream stops then we start getting weather like canada

    i.e proper winters

  • @PinkGottiMobs - did you ride yesterday? What was riding down from Highgate like?

Yes, I rode down Archway wich was fine. The roads round my house are unrideable so had to push the Archway road. Was fine after that.

Last night was a nightmare though. My rear wheel was spinning in parts up Archway.

What I did notice though that while riding in the middle of the road (wich was still icy as fuck) that the cars behind were really quite considerate and didnt hastle at all. Cheers London drivers (for once).
