To be fair, we could give Reen any old piece of shit and he'd be fast on it.
Cycling Plus review a lot of bikes, so I think it's fair to credit them with some sense. For the price they think this is quite a good deal and they've actually tested it. How many of the naysayers on here can say the same?

when I started writing my post Teenslains had not appeared!
How many of them are there?
;-/[ -

to be fair, maybe I shouldn't be writing it off without having ridden one
it probably is good value for someone who doesn't ride that much, but as someone who has made a few mistakes buying cheap and cheerful, I know that the cheerful don't usually last for long

My excuse for missing an apostrophe.
That said you should have seen the spelling before I edited it.

Ha! Or, indeed: Arf!

There is that theory that reeen is so fast on his bike because this minimises the time during which it could fall apart. ;P
There's a great description by him somewhere of how he changed just about every single component and the only thing left is a frame.

nice review.unipacs are pretty good value for money, especially for people who aren't interested in being part of the scene

Every problematic unipac/create i have seen has been as a result of being poorly put together.
Mend a Bike in Fulham were selling them, and i had a right go at them, but then the mechanic said hang on, if its put together with some care, the wheels trued, and a decent bb and headset installed, then for your average joe it was a way better option at 200 quid than what you wold get from Halfords. Also i think the Creates are a (small) step up in quality from the original unipack
He had a point.

I did notice from the photos, there are component that differ from the original unipack, especially the cockpit section.
The mechanic at Fulham is pretty spot on, althought it mean do you need to change BB and headset (is that what they were saying Vinyl) to make it ridable.
Ed, you seem know all about it, when was it exactly that you rode one?
nearly two years ago when I first join this forum and ask whether the unipack is worth the money or not after testing it out at Portobello's.
Naturally it's not the same as the Create nowadays.

So buy cheap bike, spend extra cash just to make it rideable? Sounds silly. Even though I have just done exactly the same thing. I am hoping the fuji is slightly better quality though.
Having said that, it sounds like a challenge. I'd almost want to ride one and see how long it lasts before it dies.
As long as it's safe I don't have a problem. It's probably closer to what bikes should cost anyway.

Somone up by Manc Uni was handing out flyers for a website that sells these the other day, i got talking to him about how crap Unipacks were, he said they are now on the third generation or somethign, and have got new bottom brcaket and hub bearings, as these were the main problems or something? he seemed to love his, i don;t know if he bought it before he got the job or not though

I've always suspected cycling mags give gear they test an easy ride. Now they've reviewed the Unispak I know they're mostly just a massive corporate blowjob for the industry.

I know it's cool to slag off the unipack, but how many people have any actual experience of one? Ed, you seem know all about it, when was it exactly that you rode one?
like 3 of my mates have them. And they are utter shite, falling apart left right and centre.
The bike i just put together myself for around £200 is so much better... -

To be honest, i bought a Unicrap/Create-a-headache. At one point one of the nuts that holds the pedals stripped. It was so bad that it destroyed the bottom bracket and i had to replace basically everything.
It SOUNDED like a tractor, and at one stage, i went to trixies and someone (sorry, cant remember who) told me i should go over the bike and tighten everything i could. I thought he was joking but sure enough, nothing was tight.
But i missed one: I was riding home one night when suddenly the risers came loose and flipped. It was as i was going round a corner to a red light. So in the insueing chaos, i came off my bike and into an old lady who sweetly picked me up and told me it would be ok. The nut that holds the risers had come loose!!!
The brakes are shite, like as in utter tripe. They work as well as normal brakes do in the wet. And speaking of wet, you might as well not have brakes at all. So im not suprised if ppl take them off totally. At least youre not lured into a false sense of security!!!
The frame itself doesnt seem to bad but it does weigh about the same as a small tank.
Now it is my pub/brick lane bike. Its a lot of fun if you dont mind coming off your bike regularly.
how could someone with a Honda possibly know that their motorcycle is better than a 'Chong Shen' or whatever chinese rip off that costs 1/3 of the price, without having ever ridden one?
MADNESS!
