  • Isn't this the winter we just skip the alps? Even if it'll be allowed, is it even remotely responsible?

  • Note that the FT article says that individual countries can make exceptions, which Austria has already done I believe. I.e Brits have to turn up at the border with a negative covid test in hand.

Its an EU recommendation, not a rule.

  • I’ve not read this thread so I’m not sure if you sell kit in here, so let me know if not.

I ideally need to shift some skis. I’m not sure if they are worth anything anymore but they were pretty spenny when I bought them (might have been Verbier prices though to be fair). They have not been used since I last taught a few years ago. I’m looking for advice on price (if any) more than anything. TIA

Volkl mantra sticks with Marker duke 16 touring/off piste bindings (177)

K2 silencers with Marker Griffon bindings (169)

    Salamon Tornado Ti’s (178)

  • Think it's fine to sell on here.

I'd think you probably need to specify how much time (maybe in weeks?) you have spent on em, and how hard uv ragged em etc. Probably look for as new prices for that years model and then halve it?

  • Alright cool.

I’m going to keep the silencers but the other two pairs are for sale.

The mantras were wildly expensive when new, I think the bindings were £600 on their own.

They were used for one season on and off maybe once a week November-March, so not too much in total. They have a couple of decent scratches on the bases but nothing that can’t be repaired.

    £200 + postage

Tornado Ti’s - great carvers but not worth much at all now. They are well used.

Free to anyone that wants them - Just cover the postage.

  • might be worth googling for demo ski's of the same type. then you can get a gauge of pricing.

demo's tend to be a lot cheaper, as yup, they have been used by people to try the skis

  • Does anyone have any tips for stopping an iPhone dying in cold weather? It seems that each time I take my phone out when I'm outdoors at the moment, the battery drains in an instant and it switches off (was using running in -4c on Dartmoor the other day and needed it for navigation so was pretty annoyed when it switched off!).

This always happens when I'm skiing so I've got a hefty battery pack with me in case of emergencies, but I'd prefer something a bit lighter. I always wear it close to my body, but the second I take it out and try to use it, it dies... Are any of the newer iPhone models less likely to drain in cold weather? Or is there some sort of thermal case I can get?

    Thanks

  • I had this with my 6s. No issues with my current XR.

    What model do you have?

  • Where are you taking it out from? I usually keep my phone near my skin above my base layer when in cold environments. Have never had a problem down to minus 50 (in Canada)! Phone is rarely out for more than one minute though.

  • Mine did that when the battery was on its way out. I'd previously used it skiing with no problems. What does the battery health say?

  • I had a similar experience last night. iPhone 8 went from 25% to 0 over a 1hr ski tour with Strava running. It was in a thigh pocket behind some gloves. I think if you are going to be using it regularly then only option is to get a newer model with better battery life in general or as you say, keep it hooked up to an external battery.

  • I could be tempted. What model/year are the dukes?

  • yeah it's been an issue for me when the phone battery was goosed anyway and needing a charge through the day if I was using it a lot.

  • I keep it in the breast pocket of my fleece (ie next to my base layer). I’m moving to Canada this year and want something I can rely on!

Maybe it’s just that the battery is on its way out - could probably do with an upgrade. @Greenbank I’m not sure how to check the battery health?
Edit: found battery health, but it says it’s ‘unable to determine battery health’...

  • Maybe it’s just that the battery is on its way out

Given that you're keeping it warm it does sound likely that your battery is dying.

  • What size are they drilled for?

I'm tempted to get them as a touring set up to tide me over before I get my proper one (Shifts mounted on camox probably), given that might be the only chance to get out on the hill this season (if the restrictions allow us to leave our council areas before the snow goes...). I've already got some mantras in 184 actually.

This place is a short walk from my house.. shame it’s closed these days, toxic pffft.. okay Covid I accept but still..

don’t they know that I grew up on a council estate surrounded by asbestos ffs..

  • went there once back in the day. went in the evening so you just had the lights of east London set out in front of you. it was pretty cool. didn't realise I was being poisoned at the time but it was windswept so hopefully it dispersed quickly

Zermatt has been cut off again, at least by rail. This weather is messed up, the snowpack is completely fucked. It's probably a good thing so few people are able to be out skiing, it's so dangerous everywhere here.

  • Winter temps have been really high in spells in Zermatt in recent years. Causing problems for climbers as well as skiers.

Last Jan I could hear the East face of the Matterhorn crumbling away in rockfalls. Genuinely sounded like Summer.
