  • I am seriously considering a splitboard for teh optionz

  • haha love it. Consider me fully pwned

  • Also happy to lend somebody a try of my rollerskis :D

  • Always thought that looked pretty wild!

  • Always thought that looked utterly ridiculous!

    Ftfy

  • Both versions are true

  • I've still a trip in March booked, but my gut says I'll be getting little / no skiing this year :(

  • I'm wondering about booking something in the New Year on the proviso that it's fully refundable, however I can't think of a way around the insurance issue - if the country in question is on the FCO "no travel" list then insurance won't be valid. Hell of a roll of the dice to bet on France being off the list for the correct period. Also assuming that the current moratorium on travel in lockdown #2 would be lifted for Christmas and shortly beyond.

  • I've mentally given up on the possibility of any skiing for 2020/21. Cycliste, on the other hand, now has her first set of ski touring kit. Lucky, er, girl.

  • then insurance won't be valid.

As somebody who has racked up a £15k medical bill in a skiing accident (insurance paid), this gives me the heebie jeebies.

  • http://www.battleface.com do insurance for places on the No Travel list. We bought a policy for a trip to South America in December (since had to cancel anyway cos borders unlikely to be open)

It includes Winter sports cover as long as you are under 71, but you'd have to check what that means in practice (eg offpiste, freestyle etc) .

Our cover was about £65 each for a 3 week trip.

Yep. 8 minutes under a helicopter cost me £7.5k, before any treatment.

  • IIRC the surgery and week in hospital for me was over 50k euros to the insurance

  • Carre/Carte Neige should cover everything except repatriation anyway right?

  • Yeah the teide stuff is definitely a joke. However my folks did stay at the parador when it was snowing once.

Anyway the thing to do IMO would be hire a good road bike and get some miles in. basically constant climbing.

That's an aside. Onto skiing, scotland for sure, but it depends on what sort of winter we get. Last season was a wash out so more of the same and there will be a lot of disappointed people. My advice would be to aim for glencoe or nevis range.

  • I'm just holding on and if it's possible, even late season, I'll book something/drive, rock up somewhere in france. Not going to book anything just now though.

  • Same here, got a group of us who have put 5 days of annual leave aside for a last minute dash to the alps if we are able to and the snow looks good.

Thinking about driving in a convoy. Should take a full day to get to resorts in the Geneva area.

  • You driven before? It's good fun, the french roads are superb, the services are much better than the fucking dross we get here as well.

Pain from up in glasgow as it's another day added on but you're laughing if from london/south coast.

  • Never done it in a day from London. Often drive to Italy and it takes 3 days, first day we don't usually get close to the alps so it would be a long day. Think for this we would get euro tunnel instead of the ferry tho

I'm not flying anymore in Europe though so it's either that or a covid infested train....

  • We regularly drive London <-> Switzerland. If we get an early eurotunnel (7am ish) we can be in Switzerland for afternoon tea. Even quicker on the way back (time difference) ;)
Or leave the night before on a late ferry, and sleep in an 'aire' for a few hours. Then get to the resort for first lifts!

  • This is also a good idea. The formule 1 etc type motels are also half decent shout for getting a few hours kip.

The usual for us would also include a large supermarché stop in albertville, to fill up on retro 33 export stubbies and food for the week.

  • Every time I have a Kronenbourg stubby I am instantly taken back to ski holidays and beers on the apartment balcony.
We have the luxury of a camper now, so no need for a motel!

  • How does it take 3 days? 2 days I can kinda get but 3? Or are you actually enjoying the trip? :)

  • Ha, yeah it's about enjoying the trip. Which also means getting a. Morning ferry which usually takes up the whole morning of one day. Early Eurotunnel + longer days and we could do it in 2. But that makes things unpleasant. But my family is from venice/the dolomites (near Falcade) so it is a fair journey even if you take every toll road
