Server move

  • Actually, it's more than a server move... but that's the snappy title.

You've all experienced the downtime over the past few weeks and whilst the hosting company know what it is (a SYN flood on the network) they also state that "it's too low to trigger the alarms"... which means they're not stopping it or proactively managing it and the impact to us. Someone on their network is the target or source of a denial of service attack, and it's affecting the network performance and therefore us.

So... we're on the move. With our current host we have 3 large servers and 1 small load balancer, and we're based in Missouri so the pages have to bounce off of New York before they manage to get to London where the majority of our users are.

The new host has 5 servers, 1 large database one, 2 medium web ones, and 2 small servers for load balancing and the mailing lists. This should work out cheaper overall, and it's going to be incredibly simple to add or remove web servers on the fly as we need them.

Oh, and the new datacentre is in London, just down in the docklands. So I'm expecting British users to see a significant speed increase. Pinging the current servers in Missouri takes around 100 milliseconds, pinging the new London datacentre is coming back with 5 milliseconds.

    What does this all mean?

Well, at some point there will be an interruption in service as the stuff gets moved over. This will most likely be in the next fortnight. I'm hoping to create a little overlap between the old and new so that you barely notice.

And yes I'll have backups in place ;)

You will need to modify your bookmarks too. More on that later... but simply the domain name is going to be shorter. For quite a while the old will direct to the new but it's still best to have your bookmarks point to the new domain.

    Other plans for the future:

    • Articles. I want to take the best info on the forum and present it in a more notable way so that it's the first stuff that people find. Stuff like cycle training, the great reviews, ride diaries, build journals, mechanics tips, highlighting stuff people are doing (the cycling entrepreneurs) etc... things that are getting lost in the noise in the forum but should be seen.
    • Re-design. I'll admit it, I suck at design... so I have a design guru helping out and hopefully we'll have something to show early next year.
    • You, doing more. I really want to be able to get back to what is great about this community and provide ways for people to stay involved with the more valuable things this forum has done and continues to do. So feedback and ideas are welcome.
  • ...And yes I'll have backups in place ;)...

I had to read through 5 paragraphs to get to the important bit :D

  • can I have a shell account?

    ..meh didnt thinkso >:(

    To host an IRC bot?

  • I remember vaguely that threats of libel/slander actions from the subjects of posts here were deflected by the fact all the forum infrastructure was outside UK.

Does you and the site now being UK based change the legal side of things? Have I got the wrong end of the stick?

  • Sounds good, VB. Too bad that other hosting company are fuck nuts, but it'll be nice to have a speed boost.

You didn't mention what the new domain will be? lfgss.com?

There's definitely no ambiguity about legal domain on my side... we're definitely covered by UK law and the Data Protection Act as a result of being in the UK. I can still validly avoid liability for things said, and that remains a civil matter for those involved, but I won't have the ability to dismiss so casually copyright and other claims so I have to bear those in mind.

Upside though is that the traffic will not be under routine monitoring by the USA and the ability to secretly request files from the ISP without a warrant doesn't exist in the UK. So as long things aren't criminal then this should make the data safer.

  • To host an IRC bot?

no no, just a small group of friends i have that like to keep upto date with my latest cheap cheap boat insurance and Viagra deals.

The current host are really great, good service. But it's unfortunate that the internal network became mostly useless during an attack and as that's how this site works (traffic between the load balancer and web site and then between the web site and database) it affected us a lot.

They did their best to react quickly whenever it was reported, and the uptime was still above 98%; but at that rate it would mean 7 days of actual downtime a year which is when you realise it's not good to accept 98% uptime... I want 99.99% at least (a few hours downtime a year).

    fakenger.co.uk

  • fakenger.co.uk

Ha! Does that mean we get to ban Will?

  • forum day out to look at the cabinet in the Docklands? bring your passport ;)

Libel ! Copyright ! Other legal stuff !!!

    ??

    [EDIT . . . . what adoubletap said already . . . ]

  • Ha! Does that mean we get to ban Will?

I suggest you read the 'bickering' thread; this kind of petty vendetta is no longer acceptable, Mr Pumpkin Head

  • Nothing you say can be taken serious any more. Your avatar has made sure of that.

  • one for the lookalikes thread

  • sorry Mark; you can't win this one. Thanks Matt

  • Ha! Nice, Matt, you jerk.

    (win what now?)

  • Re: redesign, I'd like to see something like a floating/side list box for ride/event pages.
Similar to the tag editor where only you could add or remove your input, eg: bob +2.
Save the pages getting taken over by the list making it easier to read.

Are you being hosted at Global Switch 1?

  • Must spread rep... I think it's an improvement...

Phew, normality has been restored. At first I was worried that someone might have swapped Mark's pumpkin for some strange head.

The events will have something done to it... in fact I'll do something this afternoon just to fill the gap.

The new facility is operated by Telecity and will be their Powergate facility:

  • That has to be the most dull video ever posted on this site.

  • You clearly haven't seen the video of edscoble and trip riding from Gray's Inn Road to the South Bank. :)
