Yes! That's been posted in here or the surly thread before, I'd totally forgotten about it. Basically the gold-standard steamroller for me

120mm rear disc is possible no?
Get a double sided threaded hub and put one of those threaded disc adapters on (2quid from AliExpress). -

Yeah it's nice, and seems to work for him, here's a picture of it after a 300km gravel race

Presumably the franebuilder that did the work approved. If you take it to a framebuilder please report back

Looks spot on, food for thought

The Special Ed he refers to is this guy https://instagram.com/oulufixed?utm_source=ig_profile_share&igshid=1jbwftqfadn8w
So not a professional framebuilder, but has built a few nice bikes and modified many. He's added a braze-on and pulled out a dent on my Sibbo too.

I'm fairly sure the Steamroller fork can withstand a disc brake tab being added.
I mean, how different can the fork be on the Straggler, for example?
-
• #2634
So I don't know if we are just talking pot luck with the forks
-
• #2635
Pot luck :)
Lets rethink.
It can be done.
Everyone says No. Surly won't endorse a mod like that, don't do it. The factor is tube wall thickness and crown. The wall thickness is unknown unless anyone has found an actual listing of the tube/fork blade used.
You can buy Surly droputs and fork crowns so specs are out there. There is one example in the wild that appears to still be going strong.
I would attempt to contact directly (which might be doable ) what disc mount and how was it welded/brazed.
Replicate that as it's been done and worked, the variable is the fork Blade ? has the material changed since that modification. Unlikely but possible..... the weight of the forks is well known and never seen any chatter about anyone getting a lighter weight than the known weight for the fork, which indicates the materials haven't changed.Overthinking all this as i am off work and bored :)

why so surly from pedal room.
a couple of stock fork conversions out there but hard to find actual close up pics of the mount used.

Just a quick question regarding tire choice:
I'm thinking about buying a steamroller und planning to use 35c tires.
Over in the tire thread the recommendation seems to be Voyager Hyper, Marathon Supreme, etc.
How do these tires hold up to a little bit of skidding? Surely someone on here will have some experience?! :-)
What is your go-to wide-ish tire suitable for street riding including skidding? -

Panaracer pasela is decent
-
• #2640
+1
32/35mm Paselas are great! -
• #2641
Thanks for the suggestions. Have read that people have mixed opinions on the Paselas.
How do they compare to the Ribmo? They seem to be decent as well... -
• #2642
Ribmo are working well (albeit in a narrower size) for me.
Been running one in the back of one fixed bike for god knows how long. I actually bought a Rando to replace if ages ago as I was in decathlon and it was cheap but it’s still not worn out yet.

Hey James,
Thanks for reaching out. As the Steamroller is our most pared down, track-ish style bike, we will not be updating the frame or fork to run disc brakes.
Regards,
Evan Giannobile
Customer Service + Warranty SupportSo we will be forever doomed to bodge a disc brake onto a Steamroller

Did you email Triton too?
-
• #2645
Nope. You think it is worth doing?
-
• #2646
Absolutely. I want to see this done! I just know if I do it with my cc it'll look gappy and a bit naff compared to a steamroller
-
• #2647
How much are custom steel disc forks? Maybe if a few people were interested it might make economic sense?
-
• #2648
I know @ginllfixit wants one
-
• #2649
One of the Polish builders does disc forks for track bikes for about £100 I remember, I forget which one atm. I would certainly be up for getting one. Argos is my local builder here in Bristol, I might cycle up to see him and get a quote. I got a feeling it will be significantly more expensive though.

Yeah that is why I am loathe to swap in my Straggler fork. I will enquire.
Not thought about a kickback hub but I like the sound of it.
