  • brake drilling required? steerer length?

  • Looking to upgrade my steamroller to carbon forks. Recommendations on solid, black carbon forks? Anything for sale on the forum perhaps? It's a large, 59cm frame and I want to run it with a brake and without spacers.

I had them, sold to Indra, this is what they look like: http://www.pedalroom.com/p/carbon-fibre-fixed-10141_18.jpg

    and on my Dodici: http://www.pedalroom.com/p/dodici-gara-6168_26.jpg

  • I was thinking about getting a straight carbon fork every now and then, too. I am just not sure how a different axle-to-crown measurement will affect the geometry/handlung.

    Any experiences?

Less snappy but more stable ride I guess

  • and much reduced tyre clearance of course.

  • Put a thomson stem and seatpost on the steamroller today. So niiiice now. Will take photos when I'm sure of stem position/ have cut the steerer.

  • Less snappy but more stable ride I guess

But I want to keep it snappy!

  • I doubt you will even notice it. I changed to a Columbus minimal fork which has a lower axle to crown and bigger rake and have to say it made no difference to the handling of the bike that I could feel. Made the bike 1/2 a kilo lighter though of course if that matters to you.

  • How much did it affect the bb-drop? Its quite deep yet and I dont want it to come much deeper

Don't know, and not something I am worried about as have never had pedal strike in 10 years of riding Steamrollers. You could do the calculation I suppose and guess it would be 1 or 2 mm. I am not even sure what the difference was in axle to crown and is probably less that you'd think given the deeper crown of a carbon fork.

This is all princess and the pea stuff to me

  • ;d

  • I confess I thought of getting a Condor Tempo frame on the Cycle2Work scheme to swap out with my Steamroller. Decided I didn't have the cash in the end. But I do a fair few Regent's Park sessions and 30-50-mile training rides on my Surly and do feel its weight, especially on climbs. Would the Tempo be swifter/better?

  • The geometry would be better as it's more aimed at the road, whether the Steamroller were build to be as close to a track geometry.

Or you can stick a road fork on the Steamroller with more rake to make it handle quicker, like this fork that have a similar A2C.

    44mm rake would sufficient.

  • The Steamroller is no closer to track geometry than road geometry and the low BB makes it feel more like a road bike to me.

As for feeling the weight - the Condor Tempo appears to be around 1.8kg and the Surly is around 2kg. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't feel the difference in 200g, my own body weight changes by that amount on a daily basis depending on when I weigh myself.

  • The geometry have the biggest difference, rather than weight between the two frame.

Standard Surly fork is 38mm, hence 44mm to quicken the steering up a bit.

  • As I said earlier on in the thread. Changed my for to a 43mm rake and doubt if I would have even noticed in a blind test

  • Missing my steamroller greatly after it was stolen from me, and so I'm after a new frame.

If anyone has one in 56 that they're willing to sell, please let me know. Or if anyone sees a good offer about post it in here. Some great looking bikes you lot have.

    Thanks

will this tyre fit on steamroller with rear brake on?
Vittoria Cross Xg Pro Folding Tyre 700c Black 32mm

i had marathon plus 32 but they dont have any knobs obviously

  • Yes.

If it doesn't, put a longer chain on.

  • finally got a steamroller frame at the right price, is being shipped this week. photos before and after powder coat coming soon...

gonna be a nice summer/porteur build with front rack etc

not sure what to do about RAL colouring yet though...

it may depend on the brake shoe i guess.

fwiw I currently have a 38c with knobblies on the back of my roller and there's 3mm clearance from the brake bridge. could have put another link on the chain to get some more but it would have put it right on the edge of the dropouts. on the front i can run a 35c with front brake (miche long drop jobbie) with no issues (although it touched the tyre slightly when braking before i put new brake pads on.

  • Cheers for advice guys.
Wanted these tyres for Brighton traffic free ride, but Planet X express delivery wasn’t express enough so I missed the ride.

  • 32 would have been pretty rough, the thames path kicked my arse on 35/38.

as a result of all the dust/dirt from the ride I spent over an hour cleaning my roller and returning it to commuter mode with 23c's

  • Has anyone got any rear hub lock nuts for the surly steamroller kicking about?

  • So. I'm after a 53cm steamroller at some point in the future, if any one has one for sale or sees one, please let me know!

    Thanks.
