I walked past Banquet in Kingston on Saturday at about 11. Queues round the corner, melts everywhere, interviews about how much people love their sweet vinyls - I decided not to stick around and went to Collectors which didn't have any RSD clusterfuck going on. Much better and I got The Isley Bro's 3+3 and Sly Johnson Is It Because I'm Black for peanuts!
I went back today to see what was left and there was tonnes of unsold stuff in there including stuff I've seen go for ridiculous P on eBay?!
No BJM and no Joe Meek EP though which were the only things I wanted. If anybody got spares lemme know!

Want to own your own record shop - stuffed full of curiosities?
Well you can - On The Beat in the West End of London is up for sale:
As the listing says “If you’re at the stage in your life where you don’t have to worry about making money, but can live a bohemian life, meet interesting people every day and the occasional rock star, here’s your chance to take over the oldest record shop in Swinging London"
See the eBay listing here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/On-The-Beat-Records-A-Classic-Vinyl-Collectors-Record-Store-in-Central-London-/221305313500?pt=UK_B_I_Business_for_Sale_CV&hash=item3386d318dc
If only I had the £300,000 asking price.......

Very cute, I could do with a slipmat upgrade... Which reminds me, where are my fucking butter rugs?

Anyone got any record player recommendations? I managed to break mine when I moved house. Looking for something around £100 mark, not bothered about fancy pants functions like usb ports etc just want to play records, must have good speakers.

If you can stretch your budget (or track down a second hand one) then the Project Elemental is a great value turntable.
-
• #70
Funnily enough I was just looking at one of those.
-
• #71
The reviews are all very good and I don't think it can be beaten for the money. I was initially looking at one then found a Debut Carbon (with the Ortofon Red cartridge) that was ex-display for the same price so went for that instead.
-

Speakers are an entirely different issue, are they not? Turntables don't come with a set of designated speakers. (Or are you talking about it having a pre-amp?)
I advise you stretch your budget if you can; any hi-fi set up is only as good as the weakest link, so why scrimp on the turntable itself?
Anything by Project should do - that Elemental suggested above is about right. My Project Debut has lasted me years and is still going strong. -
• #73
Yeah have no idea why I mentioned speakers, ignore that, it's Monday, I am still asleep.
-
• #74
Project stuff looks pretty slick, too - nice and minimal.

Cheers guys, have gone with the Elemental
It's undoubtedly good for participating record shops but it's incredibly shit for those that buy physical music all year round.
Ebay is already awash with records at ridiculous prices - some of the RSD re-releases are more expensive than the original pressings making re-pressing them utterly pointless.
Record Store day is really just a way for wankers to make money. They're no better than ticket touts. (Grumble, grumble.)
