  • GD4YA Records just print pictures on their records and have plain sleeves. I have quite a few and have to put a handwritten label in the poly sleeve so that I know what the hell they are.

    An example:

  • It's normally/always etched into the run off. Presumably so that the sides can be identified without a label.

  • Mfw looking at run out etchings these days:

  • Anyone going to We Out Here festival this week(end) I'll have a stall inside the Near Mint Record Store tent.
    Come say hi!
    :)

  • I'm having to have a bit of a purge of the collection to make some space, so there's a bunch of new bits on my Discogs if anyone is interested. Bit of jazz, hip-hop, funk, all sorts.

  • Getting rid of Rhapsody in White? My oh my.

  • Yeah, it's good, but it's a bit of a shabby copy. And i desperately need to get rid of some stuff...

  • Vinyl folks with much more experience than I - I keep experiencing dust balls on my stylus with new vinyl. Tonight I’m listening to my brand new reissued copy of Nixon by Lambchop for the second time and I can hear heavy distortion on the vocals. I have a look and there’s a big chunk of dust and debris trailing from the stylus. I lift the needle and clean it with a brush which pretty much ruins the listening experience, but it’s probably going to come back. This is not unusual, and as I write this the second track is fucking up. It’s making me want to stream it rather than listen to the vinyl. What’s happening here and how can I defeat it pls?

Setup is Technics SL 1200G with AT-VM95SH stylus. Cheers.

  • Do you use a brush? I always brush before I drop the needle.

This lot have turned up in the last 10 days. Was very happy to find the Satanic Majesties at a new local record soup. I've been after a 3D copy for forty years but always been too picky about condition. I'm not willing to pay the price they command now so this OG Aussie stereo is perfect, not the greatest pressing, very trebly, but it'll do.

I tried to buy that Sniffers LP when it came out but it was sold out at Rough Trade East, which I thought was odd as they'd put it out, it's taken a while to get hold of one.

  • Always brush, both carbon and velvet. It’s driving me up the wall.

Love Amyl and the Sniffers btw.

  • I had similar with a VM95ML on a Rega Planar 2, including infuriating bits of material that seemed to have wrapped themselves around the diamond shank. I just ended up obsessing about how clean the stylus was, using a brush, magic eraser and AT tacky goo whilst inspecting the stylus under a loupe. I wonder if the more advanced diamond shapes are prone to collecting gunk?

Currently using spherical and bonded elliptical styluses on a Garrard SP25, and having a far more relaxed experience.

  • Anti-static cloth then? Where's the fluff coming from???

I didn't like the last record at all, preferred them when they were a rag-tag gang of moronic sharpies playing three chord punk rock. Progress, eh? 🙄

  • There's a lot to be said for giving even new vinyl a wet clean.
Dust and debris should be visible anyway. Might be worth brushing every side you play.
Also some microfibre cloths will leave more fluffy crap in the groove that you may remove through cleaning, which is annoying and defeats the whole idea.

  • London diggers... FYI
The traditional Hackney Record Fair isn't happening this year (at least not in Hackney), instead there's one on 1st Oct in Peckham (Bussey Building). Same organiser.

For me it always depends regarding dust and debris, on the weather / how long my window is open that day.. also on the discs themselves - new vinyl sometimes being very static-y.. (wet cleaning helps with this, if you don't have a dedicated apparatus that does it for you you can also use 10% isopropanol / 90% water in a spray bottle and a fine microfiber cloth, wiping along the groves).

I oftentimes use one of these to quickly & gently brush away any stuff when I put on a record / when I flip it over, this reduces build-up on the stylus -

..and I thought brushes for the needle were overrated, but I've found that it does help, especially after playing new vinyl, especially new vinyl that hasn't been wet cleaned before, as the stylus carves out quite a bit of shit from the groves oftentimes..

  • I just wet clean before the first listen, then use a carbon brush each time. Normally does it.

The finer the stylus the deeper they'll be able to get into the groove so you might find they pull out some crud that doesn't get removed even by wet cleaning. Should minimise it the build up.

This being said I've got an early house compilation that I've wet cleaned about 10x on the first side, and it still sounds shit.

  • Turns out my stylus is damaged. I put in the stylus from my old cartridge and no more distortion. Annoying but it must have been when i mis-cued it. At least I haven’t screwed up all my records which I was starting to fear.

I’ve got this beaut waiting in the wings so I’ll get it installed as soon as I can get hold of the right fasteners.

  • One of my carts did this recently, very annoying. Just grabbed one from the other turntable, I very rarely use them both at the same time anyway. I thought my cartridge problems were over when I switched to Ortofons, apparently not! 😐

  • Decent-sized digging fest tomorrow at Peckham's Copeland Building.
No Hackney or Walthamstow mega fairs this year. :(
See Hackney Flea Market on socials.

  • Does anyone have experience of selling records at record fairs?

There are around 600 or so records in my parents garage i've been asked to get rid of. Nothing worth more than 15 or so quid, but not total shit either. I was just going to a local fair and sell them 3 for a tenner as it's probably a better way to move them than selling the 50 or so a shop would be interested in and still being left with a load more to deal with.

  • Does anyone have experience of selling records at record fairs?

Either that or sell to a dealer/reseller as one job lot.
I do (sell at) fairs fairly regularly in the South/South-East. PM me if you've got questions about fairs in general or anything specific you want to know.

  • Are there any services that sell your stuff on Discogs for % commission?
