  • Thanks for the info.

  • Whoaaaaaa. Where from? Is it an original?

  • Yes, original 2006 release. Got it from eBay for £59!! Vinyl condition is close to NM, cover has a few marks but generally VG+.

  • They sound great. You may as well pick up MBV too, massively underrated i reckon.

  • It arrived!

    Falling - Out of Sight

Released in 2016, the band were only 18 and broke up before the album was released. They printed 200 copies on vinyl (14 of which are logged on Discogs with no copies sold). I've had it on my wantlist since early 2017. It's a genuinely great album that reminds me a lot of Slint (both sound and backstory a little).

I was briefly browsing my wantlist a couple of weeks ago and a copy was for sale. For $20! I bought it immediately.

24 hours later, the sale was cancelled. The seller said that he'd listed it in order to sell to someone else and I'd sniped it (in the 2 mins after he'd listed it and before he'd messaged the other person) - astronomical odds.

We messaged back and forth and it turns out he was the guitarist / vocalist in the band (!) and that the one he'd just sold was his 2nd to last copy of the LP. However, he had a spare test pressing that I could have if I wanted.

$50 (inc shipping) later and I have a signed copy of a test pressing of an impossible to get album that I love.

  • CSB. Really.

  • Sorry to jump in as a total novice, but my GF has hinted that she would like a record player for Christmas and it's a bit of a minefield for the uninitiated. If my budget was c£200, can I realistically get something that will pass as a decent introduction to the world of vinyl? If so, I'm all ears to suggestions. Thank you in advance for sharing your wisdom!

  • Brilliant, what a great story!!

  • Pro-Ject Primary E is available around £150-170 and is WhatHifi best under £200 for 2021.

Don't forget to factor in the need for a phono stage or phono input of an amp (if you don't have these already).

  • I had exactly the same, got the Pro-Ject Primary E that Soul linked plus their phono stage for another £50 https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/15163/pro-ject-phono-box-e-black-phono-stage/ (you may or may not need that depending on your amp). Two together cost about £190 a few years back.

Obviously if you don't currently have amp and speakers then it gets a bit trickier.

  • Many thanks @soul & @aggi

That looks ace. And yes- a phono stage is needed so that's very useful, too.

  • My humminguru ultrasonic cleaner turned up today. Looks good. I'll give it a crack tonight

  • I think I might use this weekend to explore this incredible thing.

  • Sweet, mine's due on Monday. Hope it's not a lemon.

  • Was this the crowd funding thing?

  • Mine has a wee crack in the lid

  • I've got a gallon of cleaning fluid, but it has been in the garage for months and is slightly cloudy.

I'm going to have to find some distilled water somewhere

  • Pet shops apparently. I get mine from the window cleaner, they have a machine that uses vast amounts.

  • Ah cool. Cheers

  • Oh no!

Got mine today, looks ok so far but I had to leave it at work as I was riding home.

I'm too tired to do any research, will distilled water (from a pet shop or window cleaner) just do the job as a cleaning solution then?

  • The window cleaner reckons it has tiny mineral content which is what you want. I add a soap to create a bit of bubble based cleaning. There's a recipe involving Tergitol and photoflo or similar that I mentioned upthread. I'm not using ultrasonic cleaners for records, it's possible the soap is not desirable but most ultrasonic cleaning I've done on small objects like watches benefits from soap in the water.

  • I have cleaned about 30 or so records with mine. it seems to do a pretty good job.

    1. you need to wipe the record first with a cloth - the fingerprints do not come off in the machine.
    2. i reckon somewhere between 5-10 is the right spot to change the water. i did 5, then 10, then 15 and after 15, the water was dirty and the filter was showing the muck.
    3. there is dirt in the bottom of the tank - it is black! i hope it isn't vinyl.
4 tipping the water back in each time is the hassle, although minor.

I'll try a before/after listening to see if i can notice anything once i can get rid of my family

  • I read few articles (mainly to justify using deionised water, as it's all i had!). most of them don't recommend a detergent for US cleaning.

i have seen a few people suggest that both a wet vac type cleaner and an US gets the best, as the soap gets the greasy prints and the US gets the dirt, but i'll be fucked if i ever use a wet vac one again. I certainly won't be cleaning them twice!

  • i'm not sure the type of water makes all that much difference, unless you are going to use fresh water for each one. even then there will be some residue in the tank
