Mince Pie Appreciation

  • Unless and until a colleague or customer brings them in to my workplace, there are to be no exceptions.

  • Gail's Bakery mincers are just too good to leave on the counter even though it is November... Crisp pastry, caramelized sugar top and wonderful zesty filling.... £2 a go adds to the sense of luxury....

  • Ugh, here come the “mince pies are a seasonal food” cowards.

If you wouldn’t eat a mince pie in august you should be banned from eating them at all.

  • Ah, the old "If you wouldn’t commute by bike in January you should be banned from riding a bike at all." argument.

Bring me mince pies in August and I'll put it to the test.

  • It’s not December yet, so they’re still out of season, ergo you could try one now, just to see how you feel?

Will climate change impact the accepted seasonality of foods? 🤔

  • Bring me mince pies in November and I'll put it to the test.

  • My favourite Christmas beer has been released today so I'm taking that as my queue to start buying mince pies

  • This can be arranged.

Better to enjoy them now than having to wade through a riot over the last tub of quality street to get your fix next month.

  • I'm taking that as my queue cue

    FTFY, in a friendly way.

  • Ah yes, it was obviously too early for my brain to engage

  • My favourite Christmas beer

    Pray do tell?

  • Where do you order Belgian Christmas beer? I've not ordered in post Brexit..

  • My favourite one isn't Belgian, it's Anspach & Hobday's pfeffenusse Stout although Stille Nacht is a banger.

I've seen some Belgian stuff hitting the shops up in Scotland this week so hopefully won't be long before we start getting them in England.

  • Ha - I'm sure there'll be an influx at work soon enough!

  • Oh sorry, how rude, UK beer is allowed too 😄 I'll keep an eye out. It's even harder to find good beer here in Lincoln.

Back to mincer chat, I just checked Konditor and it's EIGHTEEN POUNDS for a twelve deck this year..

  • Already on at least the tenth pack so far. Actual christmas time will be too busy fixing things/houses/anything else that breaks so will do the christmas eating now*

    *And maybe then too

  • These are absolute crackers. Quite boozy mind.

  • Any readily available mincers free from butter and (unsustainable) palm oil?

  • @atk I didn’t realise we shared a love of gods greatest creation. There are some unreal mincers produced in Marple- Libby’s in Marple bridge and all things nice in Marple town. If you’re up this way get 6 of each

  • I've been eating the cunts for 2 months already. Scranning one right now.

Might go to Dunns at the weekend and treat myself.

  • When the time is right (just over 2 weeks from now) Barbakan, Chorlton is a good call for those up this way.

  • Just finished a box of Sainsbury’s 6 straight-up no bullshit deep filled pies. Quite acceptable, if I’m honest. A good start to the season.

Back-to-backed them up by opening a box of Waitrose 9 mini all-butter pies. They have a slightly strange smell on opening; it’s vinegary or preservative or something. Pastry noticeably shorter and fattier than the Sainsbury’s ones but tastes floury and it seems to carry a slight taste of that vinegary/preservative smell which I didn’t enjoy. Filling is slightly sharper and slight hint of booze. Overall, didn’t enjoy them because of that funny smell.

  • I had a four deck of Morrisons 'the best' deep fill pies from the bakery section yesterday. Pastry was good (if a little sweet), filling was tasty and boozy, would recommend as a first pie of the year.

  • Any readily available mincers free from butter and (unsustainable) palm oil?

No M&S ones I could see.

    Continuing my supermarket ratings...

M&S classic all butter mince pies. Nice short pastry with a slightly buttery finish. Filling has a nice tang to it. Would like a bit more butter in the pastry I think but overall quite nice. I quite fancy a second one.

My supermarket list so far (best to worst):

    1. M&S classic all butter
    2. Sainsbury's 6 straight-up no bullshit deep filled
    3. Waitrose 9 mini all-butter (didn't like)
  • No M&S ones I could see.

Thanks, saves me wandering through the Mince Pie section of the Uxbridge branch.
