  • Tried to get some more Dusty Knuckle mincers today but the milk float had ran out :(

I have got two more reviews coming though. I think I'm going to have to give one 9/10!

  • Morrisons shortcrust mincers (in store baked), rather underwhelming. Pastry too thick, filling too meagre. £1.50 for 6, 10 mins in the oven and some custard improved matters somewhat.

  • custard

On the Mincers thread that needs some explanation.

  • ¿Adonde esta el mince?

  • I like custard, not a fan of cream (ice/single/double).

  • I ate the one with the least mincemeat first, saving the best for last.

  • Thought that the Tesco spiced rum offering was my worst pie of the year, and then “Grandma Wild’s luxury mince pie” entered my life. Pathetic mushy collapsing pastry, risible filling completely lacking in every department. So terrible that I gave one to my four year old daughter to eat, rather than waste an adult’s time. Fuck you Grandma Wild.

  • Top mincer this year has to be my partner's puff pastry, frangipane topped, booze and nut laced, mincers. I know, it's a little out there with puff and frangipane but the shop bought offerings we have sampled this year have just basically been disappointing brown sugar sludge pies is comparison.

  • Understand the aversion to creams,
more interested in the nature of the custard.
    Packet/instant/laboriously made from egg yolks?

  • Bloke who runs The Marksman used to be a top chef at a swanky restaurant.

  • Local bakery (Wild Goose, E7) topped the pie of the year awards for me, also with a puff pastry top. Recoiled at the puffy top in the first instance but it worked well. Bonus points for being fucking massive.

  • They're both ex St John, Chiltern Firehouse etc etc

  • St John's, Clerkenwell, that's it.

  • Lovely chaps, John and Tom. I did Tom’s kitchen at home, John has a bench of mine. Good neighbours / clients!

  • Small homemade batch I made. 50/50 coconut oil & vegan block as the "fat" was surprised how good the pastry was. First batch burnt a bit in 15mins but recipe had said 25min cook time at the given temperature, 11 mins seemed optimum. The burnt ones were demolished Christmas Eve, still tasty.

  • I'm a pleb/heathen/man of simple needs , tinned is fine by me, sorry (not sorry).

  • Good shout. Just cleared our freezer today. What’s the best way to heat frozen mincers?
