  • Vegan Steak pastry pocket thing was sold out today in Greggs Holborn.

  • I like smoked tofu, sweet potato (just put it in the microwave 3-4 minutes) and hummus for filling. And red cabbage or rucola

  • For simple meal prep we do a similar set of things.

Sunday night the oven gets filled with two racks of tofu/ veg sausages/ whatever I've found that looks interesting, coated in smoked paprika/ herbs/ olive oil/ pesto/ whatever I've made for sunday lunch.

Then two trays of veg- usually sweet potato/ butternut/ mushrooms- pretty simply oiled up with salt and pepper.
Then this + salad + dressing from night before goes into a wrap each evening.
(if I'm feeling really good I'll make Socca(chickpea pancakes) for the wraps.)

Then the best bit- snack is pumpkin bread or black bean brownie, again cooked at the same time as the above. It makes for a hectic 2hrs around sunday lunch but then all lunches and some dinners are prepped and ready for the week.

  • Snap! I did the same and it also turned out fucking great!

    Fuck you, in-laws!

  • To add to the Burger King fiasco just seen this about KFC fries that should be noted for anyone going to try their burger

  • Cunts kept that quiet til their hand was forced by the BK hoo-hah.

  • I think in the past year I have probably covered one individual's bonus:

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jan/08/greggs-to-pay-workers-7m-bonus-after-vegan-sausage-roll-success

  • I've looked on their website and I think the Vegan meal doesn't come with fries as standard, just a drink. Wouldn't have had any idea though. Wouldn't be surprised if people have gone in before and just had chips since they haven't offered any vegetarian or vegan options prior to this from what I can see.

  • 'Red meat plays vital role in diets, claims expert in fightback against veganism':

    https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/jan/05/red-meat-diet-modern-vegetables-lack-nutrients-fightback-veganism

Well, if over-bred, over-commercialised fruit and veg is a bad thing, then let's turn back that dial, shall we?

  • We eat wraps 2-3 times a week and tend to eat combinations of the following..

Mexican black beans (home made) or refried beans (Gran Luchito Chipotle)
    Guacamole or just smashed avo
    Tofu or Quorn
Mushrooms, peppers, aubergine, carrots, tenderstem broccoli - griddled or roasted in a spice mix
    Rice
Finely chopped spinach and or kale
Chili vegan mayo + spicy sauce as the base

  • Did anyone see that man on Veganville last night almost have a coronary whilst arguing about the dietary impact of pulses? Made me LOL.

  • The argument used in that article applies just as well to meat though. Quality has dropped in the persuit of cheap food. Oh it goes on to say so much later on, but still points the finger elsewhere:

Stanton said plants were not the only foods declining in nutrional value. Studies also that show omega-3 fatty acid levels in Scottish farmed salmon have also dropped by half

And then this (below) - whilst not entirely a lie has the implication that you need red meat at that stage in your life so a misleading statement at best.

nutrients in red meat were vital for children in the first three years of life, she added

Pretty poor article all in all.

  • They told me at the KFC when I ordered a vegan sandwich that chips aren't (wasn't even ordering any). Even said which sodas are vegan. I was impressed.

  • Agreed, not particularly useful information there. Ultimately, nutrition is a fucking minefield and a lot of it is genetics - some people do well on high meat intake where as others get along just fine without. Eg: I tend to lean vegan but seem to do better mixing it up a bit with animal products. There’s no ethical justification, just got to live with that.

And yeah, that second quote is totally misleading.

  • From fb:

"Quite ironic that the big vegan push is in January when most veg is out of season in the uk. This is just a small selection of veg on the shelf in the co-op, which if you look on their Facebook page is really promoting and trying to cash in on the vegan diet. These three items have food miles in excess of 16,600.😱That’s not including the avocados from chile. How is this diet supposed to be more sustainable than eating grass fed beef?
Don’t be stupid kids, eat British mince and tatties this January! 🇬🇧🥩 🐂"

  • Vegetables in season in the uk in January:
    Beetroot

    Brussels Sprouts

    Cabbage (Savoy and Spring Green)

    Carrots

    Cauliflower

    Celeriac

    Celery

    Chicory

    Horseradish

    Jerusalem Artichoke

    Kale

    Kohlrabi

    Leeks

    Parsnips

    Potatoes (maincrop)

    Salsify

    Shallots

    Swede

    Turnips

    Wild Mushroom

  • Nice. A friend does some sustainability analysis with work and has told me about how it can be a lot more sustainable to eat veg out of season which is efficiently grown abroad than what we have here too.

  • This, miles traveled is not a very good measure.

  • Vegan tacos tonight, a resounding success.

Tofu chilli based on this recipe: https://www.wellplated.com/tofu-tacos/

I didn’t do the beans as I had some home made ones in the freezer that I’d cooked in my wood oven back in early summer.

Really pleasing recipe, the crumbly texture of the tofu is a winner.

I sliced some of the tofu and rolled it in semolina and nori flakes before frying until crispy. Also really enjoyable.

Soy yogurt with chilli, garlic and onions powders, lots of lime juice and salt was a good base sauce for the corn tacos with some homemade fermented jalapeño sauce as a second.

Corn tacos from the Little Taquero in Bristol are the key factor. So fucking good

  • yes! love the pound bakery

  • Another Greggs Vegan Steak Bake review that I know you’ve all been waiting for. Got a steak bake and vegan steak bake for breakfast this morning to compare. As others have said definitely not chunky pieces in the vegan offering compared to the traditional one. They’d be better calling it a vegan mince and onion pasty in that respect. Pastry was perfect I thought, probably the best bit about it. In terms of filling the vegan option was definitely not as rich but did have a nice flavour for me. Score as a comparison/replacement, probably a 3/10. Score on its own I’d say 7/10.
