  • For sure and I wouldn’t go with a company like that either. It’s basically an apparel item made from a synthetic performance fabric. However most suppliers also provide at least one wool or merino product. I’d be fine with it personally because as you say, it’s good to promote the vegan alternatives since even non vegan companies will in turn produce more of the good stuff and less of the bad if the market goes that way.

  • I think it's a good thing - mainstream companies offering non-animal based products not only makes it seem less niche and more likely to be seen by the consumer, but (hopefully) will show large corporations that the market exists and these products are valid alternatives

  • I saw a documentary on veganism on german telly a while back, they interviewed a lot of people, amongst them an englishman that had a business selling shoes - he just started with a whole line of vegan shoes, looked into the camera and said frankly he didn't care about the animals at all, yet if people wanted to buy those things he'd be happy to sell them.

It's like the animals don't really care why / how you choose vegan options,
plus the old concept of voting with your wallet.

tl;dr - just buy the vegan stuff

  • Thanks guys

  • Plus more likely to have the infrastructure behind getting vegan alternatives into mainstream shops.

  • I first had that in Germany in 2002. I was vegetarian but I'd never heard to tofu and I had it in a sandwich and was amazed.

I bought it a lot when I lived in Germany later, but it's really expensive here. The cheapest tofu in a supermarket (normally Cauldron organic) is a about £5/100g (I bought some today), but the tasty Taifun stuff is £17.50/100g.

It's a shame because I love the tofu wieners.

  • Wandered into Spar in brockley and was amazed by their vegan friendly fridge section

Also they have a great selection of unpackaged vegetables and fruit.

  • Oo cheers for the heads up, after some smoked tofu and will be over that way this evening

  • You mean per kg, and not /100g right?

  • Yeah I hope that's a typo, I mean I know London is expensive, but £17.50/100g is muy ridículo.

  • So I was in Wakefield today, wandering around at lunchtime. Definitely sorted if I ever need an ECig, a tattoo, a haircut, make a bet, buy some Haribo, or acquire an empty property on the high street. But buying some fresh fruit proved impossible after six or seven shops. And then there was a Greggs! I tried two of their vegan sausage rolls, only because people had mentioned them on this thread. Now I feel part of the cultural milieu of England in 2019.

    They weren't bad at all.

  • Oops, yes I do.

  • Ok, well it isn't much cheaper here then.

  • I tried to get a vegan sausroll in Gregg's Southend yesterday, but was told the nearest one stocking them was Bluewater. Essex is simply horrid.

  • Good to know they've got them in now as I was told they were just a trial in London... guess the trial was a success? Southend is horrid... but there is a new craft beer bar where The Old Hat Club used to be so that's 1 reason to go into the shithole! I shall be checking it out soon and going via Greggs for said saus rolls

  • They’ve rolled it out to all stores due to the success. Mostly they’re sold out though.
Papa johns apparently jumping on the band wagon* and doing vegan pizza which has also sold out

    *not a bad thing

  • For clarity, they've said they're going to roll them out, but it hasn't happened yet - they hadn't reached Southend as of yesterday afternoon.

  • Spar in brockley

My local! yeh its amazing - the bread also is great packaged but wide variety - polish, african, farmhouse. everyone go there and buy everything so we locals can get more choice.

  • Ah I see... sorry misread!

  • not a bad thing

Guy's an arsehole though. He has been purged from the business but I still wouldn't buy anything from them.

  • I meant more the band wagon thing but I didn’t know about this. Seems that yes he is a cunt.

  • I’m looking for opinions on buying vegan products from not 100% vegan companies. Would this bother you?

Sorry, late reply--it's a constantly-recurring question, but I don't think it's a dilemma. There certainly is a case for giving your money to vegan companies more than non-vegan ones, even if they have vegan offerings, and I think buying from fully vegan outfits should be a priority. I've never worried about that too much, though. If I have the chance to get something from a fully vegan company, market stall, or shop, I'll do that. Most of the time, that's not the case (yet), but you do what you can.

There are different kinds of product; some products could have their entire production process replaced by something vegan, whereas in food, say, omnivorous companies that start to offer something vegan will probably retain their non-vegan product(s) from which the vegan ones are derived, too. There are honourable exceptions--I remember two from Fat Gay Vegan's influencing--Greedy Khao, who were not vegan initially, became fully vegan, as did Arancini Brothers. That's obviously the best scenario.

However, take the example of Sutton and Sons, who now have two 'fish and chips' shops in Graham Road (E8). They introduced a vegan menu, which became so popular that they opened a second, fully vegan, shop in the same street. I think that's a good development, too. Still, If I had a choice to buy 'fish and chips' from them or from (fully vegan) Battered, I'd go for Battered, who seem very sound--collection tins for hunt sabs on the counter, etc.

  • Managed to pick up a few Gregg's specials today... only for my colleague to walk in and tell me he'd bought more as well... happy Friday ya'll!
