What's the general thinking on compromise whilst abroad? I'm on my way back from running in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, and when you're staying with some of the poorest people on the planet, and all they can offer you for breakfast is two small boiled eggs and a bit of dry bread, and you won't eat again for 12hrs, you take it.
Point is, i knew where I was going and that I'd likely have to compromise for necessity. I'm in Tajikistan now and can eat vegan again (though it's pretty dreadful). What's th done thing in vegan circles - is compromise derided even when there are health risks, do you just choose holidays advisedly or what?

All superdrug own brand stuff that is vegan is labelled and nothing they produce is tested on animals. I have a feeling sainsburys and co-op is the same deal. Not sure about anything branded though!

I personally use a solid deodorant from lush 99% of the time. It's not an anti perspirant but it lasts forever and makes your sweat smell of patchouli which is alright in my book.

Fellow shout out to the waiting room. Fucking epic vegan goodness down there. Travelled across town from Chiswick to get there - but it was worth it.
I had the colonel burger - Fake chicken and cheese with hot sauce and obligatory lettuce, tom's etc.. Was incredible. Could have eaten everything on the menu. Get the fuck down there and support them. Because They need some more seating / bigger premises. And they seem pretty alright. Verging on hipster/hippie vibes.. but with no attitude. Coffee was a bit warm - get a fucking thermometer??!!

Nah mate - fuck all. Tempted to start it up. Looking for interest at the moment / doing some research. Sure there will be something similar at the up and coming Veg Fest tho.. But yeh something permanent would be much fucking needed to satisfy the greedy fat child within..

It tasted pretty good - just a little on the cool side. I dont trust the non- thermometer method. Always seems to turn out too hot or warm. Maybe Im a pedantic knunt. Maybe. I'll definitely be down again soon though - Will give the mex dog a spin. Cheers x

Well, I don't really travel, but I've thought about that before; I suspect if there really was a chance of offending people offering hospitality, I'd go lacto-ovo vegetarian for the occasion, but I wouldn't eat meat. I don't expect that I'll ever be in this situation, though.
(The main limitation for me is that I can't stand it when I'm somewhere where I don't speak the language, and so will always seek to limit my travelling to places where I do, and it's unlikely that I wouldn't be able to make my veganism clear. As I said above, I don't really travel, though, anyway.)

Quite a lot of recommendations here (in the comments), but probably similar to the ones upthread.

Also, quarrygirl has quite a lot of posts about NY food, but I can't work out how to link to the hashtag. I suspect you probably could on Twitter.

@farewell @Oliver Schick thanks to both! Will have a read and report back if we make it to some/all of them!

Might try looking in LUSH. Superdrug only have an own brand spray rather than roll on. Suppose Body Shop worth a look.

Can anyone recommend a good all you can eat in London town?
Had a great £4.95 all you can eat Indian in Brighton over the weekend - craving something closer to home.
Remember there was a pretty good Thai buffet on Windmill Street but it's closed :(

Right, who's going to VegFest over the week-end? Last year's was the best food show I've ever been to and I'm definitely going again. What I liked the best was the effect of walking in through the doors and basically stopping any thinking, as everything on offer is vegan.
Encouragingly, while last year there were a lot of channels through which free tickets were offered in advance of the show, this year I didn't spot any such offers. Or have I just missed them all? Tickets on the door will be £12, which I'll be more than happy to pay, and which seems to offer no significant disadvantage over booking barely cheaper tickets on-line.
Anyway, drop me a PM if you want to meet up. I haven't set a time yet when I'll go, so anytime on Saturday or Sunday will be fine.

I might pop down there if there's a way of doing it without leaving the dogs alone for too long.
Kinda glad I was forced to go lacto-ovo while I was away - it helped me appreciate that I don't really miss dairy that much, and while I miss a fried egg, it did feel wrong to eat one - even when I could see the chicken responsible nonchalantly wandering around the yard.

Would be great to meet you there, kl.
We need to swap stories of riding the A406 North Circular Road sometime. :)

Will drop you a line if I'm going to get there.
Running around Afghanistan felt much safer than the N Circ.

Balls. Did they say anything about tomorrow?

I went down a bit earlier and was half taken aback by the queue, which was around the block, and half very pleased at how popular it is. I'm afraid I turned straight back around and had another half of a very pleasant ride. It was definitely a day of two halves.
I'll try again very early tomorrow and if it's again completely packed I'll go spectating at hill-climbs (which was the original intention for Sunday, now perhaps foiled).
Shout out for snack food heaven for V/Vegans in deptford, The Waiting Room, along with good coffees & shakes & shit. Burgers, hotdogs & Baegels figure. Worth a visit @any of you who might be passing.
