Personally it goes hazelnut then oat then rice then soy then almond... However for nutrition alone it's difficult to argue with unsweetened soy- only one that reaches cow's protein levels with an acceptably low sugar content:

It depends on the situation for me. For hot drinks I like the thickness of soy, for cereal etc I prefer oat or rice. Unsweetened soy in its own tastes like ass.

Sorry, Nick, I won't be able to make it next month. One day!
We could finally do our long-plotted RASA visit in the meantime?

i found porridge went all watery with soy milk, as compared to the oats blending in with dairy. It's as if the oats didn't soak up the milk when I cooked it. I'd like to use soy or non dairy milk, it is the last step for me in being vegan as I don't much like cheese, but porridge with a banana and a little maple syrup is my winter staple brekkie. Any advice?

Strange, I can't say I've ever had this problem with my porridge.
What brand of soy are you using and are you perhaps using too much? How do you cook it?
-
• #1010
Was just about to say the same. I even know non-vegans who use soy for porridge because it's creamier.
-
• #1011
suecsi, ms.chris cooks the porridge with water and then usually she'll pour some almond milk or oat milk on top. PM her for details, she doesnt read this thread. I just eat fruit and fibre or granola.

• #1012
Never had that problem either and I've been making heaps of porridge lately. What brand of soy have you tried and how are you cooking your porridge Suecsi?

Has anyone been to Itadaki Zen?
Is it good?
A vegetarian friend of mine sees London as the promised land, and wants to come over to eat at various vegan/vegetarian restaurants, he's excited by the idea of vegan Japanese.

• #1018
I thought it was pretty good. Not a budget option as I recall but nothing to not recommend it.

I went once, but I didn't find it that great. The portions were very small and expensive (cough, not quite right for a cyclist). This was a few years ago, mind you. quarrygirl has raved about it.

Perhaps I ordered the wrong things, but I'd eaten better Japanese food elsewhere. Still, might be worth trying again--as I said, it's been a while since I went there.

H Bomb, me and my gf went to Itadaki before, wasnt overly impressed to be honest.
Places I would recommend for your friend:
- Mildreds in Soho
- Rasa N16
- Veggie Vegan in west London
- Amico Bio in Smithfield Market
- Angels & Gypsies in Camberwell. A Spanish place that is not veggie but they have about eight or nine vegan tapas dishes on their menu and their wine is great
- A good few south London pubs do very nice veg Sunday roasts (usually a nut roast, spuds, veg, gravy) : the Cambria, East Dulwich Tavern, Sun of Camberwell

The Coach & Horses pub in Soho and the Smithfield Tavern (of all places) are now vegetarian:

Expensive isn't so much of an issue for this guy, I think he'll be more comfortable there than a south london pub (I don't mean that in a bad way, pubs just aren't really his scene).
The review sounds good.
His interested in vegetarian/vegan asian food in particular, Rasa was also on my list.

Is he vegetarian or vegan? Vanilla Black is meant to be good but very little for vegans.
I wasnt overly impressed with Saf, but that might have been because the prices impacted on my taste buds.

Can't go wrong with Rasa.

A little way out in Twickenham, but I thought Blah Blah Blah was quite good.
