Wish my gramps were still around for this, he was a battery tech. Though probably very disinclined to answer technical questions between the 3+ naps he took during a day 😅
In practice having no standlight doesn’t suck as much as one might think, fwiw. I have the luxury of avoiding dark country lane junctions, though. That Is quite scary.

I would like to see the circuit diagram.

Found out why the standlight isn't working. Turns out there's 2 versions of Supernova taillights that look basically the same, save for voltages etched on one side (6V or 12V).
"the 12V version will only work while riding, but the capacitor in the headlight is not strong enough to supply it in standlight mode. At the same time, it drains the capacitor very quickly, so the standlight function of the headlight itself also suffers. If you use the 6V version, you should have no problems."
Guess which version mine is? So, anyone got a 6V Supernova rear light than want to sell me?

I did not know that… might explain why mine fades to black within moment of coming to a stop. That’d be highly annoying if so, time to go and check
-
• #4981
That's exactly what mine does. It looks exactly the same as my (presumably 6V) ones that I have used for years now.

I'll check my spares box. I've got a sinewave and a supernova setup I should get around to selling as I don't use it any more. Edit - Supernova E3 Pro 2 with the Seat Post Tail Light 2 (6V)

"To be totally sure that the headlight’s capacitor itself works, you can disconnect the tail light and take a quick spin around the block. If the headlight has standlight function afterwards, you can be quite certain that a 6V tail light will also work in standstill.
Unfortunately, indeed we don’t ship to UK anymore since Brexit… but our UK distributor Amba should have these lights in stock, please get in touch with them."

£78 hahaha ROFL I could fly to Germany and buy one there for less than that.

I’ve a supernova E3 triple
Let me know if you're planning on selling it. I could do with another one and as you probably know they don't make them any more.

• #4985
waves Let us know what version it is. I like my E3 Triple and my kLite, less keen on the E3 Pro and fuck every 12V rear light.
-

E3 Pro 2 6v rear.
I'm using a kLite instead as well.
-
• #4987
You wanna sell your rear? (ooh nurse)
-
• #4988
How much of a hurry are you in. I'm off on a work trip in a couple of days and won't have time to get to the post office before I go. Only gone a week tho.
-
• #4989
Well, I was thinking about using it on the weekend but I can just use a battery rear light, so not that much of a rush.
-
• #4990
Let me see if I can find it later and I'll message you
-
• #4991
Yeah, no drama. Cheers

• #4992
Isn't it the 6v for dynamo and 12v for e-bike?
-
• #4993
Seems like mines a 6v one, maybe I’m just overestimating what a stand light should be having got used to the stand light on on my revo which lasts hours at decent brightness
-
• #4994
It is.
-
• #4995
The front light dies fairly quick but the rear stays on for a while, you know, for waiting at junctions and stuff. The standlight on the klite is mental and stays on for hours. It's actually a bit annoying if you're trying to stealth bivvy.
-
• #4996
You seem to be back now so did you have any chance to look for that 6V tail light?
-
• #4997
Yeah shit, sorry I'll check tomorrow

I’m looking at hub dynamos for my MTB. It is 15x150 thru axel.
The son 28 is about £350 for the hub alone!
Are there any alternatives that are decent?
I was looking at Son as I have a deluxe on another bike that’s been great but is the wrong size to swap over. -

Shimano DH-UR708 is also decent quality. Had the 12mm and quick release versions for many years.

SP dynamos are pretty good in my experience. I think one of the 8X series fits a 15mm x 150 TA, otherwise the 6 series is new so might also work.
As @grams said!!! Thank you for chipping in with the expert knowledge.
Dunno why I’m so poor with electrics, though I had a really boring physics a level teacher so maybe that’s it.
