The thing with Time ATAC cleats, is you need to have the cleat pretty much perfectly straight in the pedal when you pull up to skid. Loads of lateral float.
Obviously the more worn the cleat the more you need to concentrate on keeping your foot straight.

I've slipped out a coupe of times on the power stroke.
Mostly, we just re-shoot the scene.

spd's are the only retention system ive ever used (apart from straps etc) and theyve been fine for me. been using the same cleats since i bought em about a year ago and havent had any accidental unclippings yet. solid.

ATAC > SPD.
I've come out of both poloing, but SPD was way worse. The problem with ATACs seems to be cleat wear more than anything else.
-
• #31
IIRC ATAC cleats are made to wear instead of the pedal, so you can use the pedals pretty much forever.

• #32
This is what they say.

spd pedals still last a fucking long time.

Had a pair on CX ride for 5 years, during which I've had 2 pairs of cleats. Never had an unclip issue. Mind you, in that time, probably walked about 200 yds on tarmac, if that. Trimming with a file is good too.

One of the finest unclipping moments of recent times:
-
• #36
My spd's are constantly getting clogged with snow which is sometimes a pain.
Last week I left the house and walked my bike through the deep snow on the drive, jumped on and rode 100m to a roundabout where the snow had been cleared.
I heard and felt a nice loud click from both pedals and so I put on the power to get away and I came unclipped as I pulled up my left foot - my knee nearly hit the handlebars and my whole balance went. How I stayed on I don't know but I think the guys at the bus stop thought I was off my head - they just saw somebody apparently crazily throw their body and leg in the air for no reason and nearly get themselves pureed under the following car. -

Hmm, was just about to get some time atac roc's after care utfs. Are they still better than spds?
Whilst I'm here, is there much difference between time atac and the roc's? -
• #38
I started riding fixed with spuds, kept unclipping from them. Went back to clips and straps for many a year, and have now gone to time atacs. No accidental unclippings as of yet, although I don't ride in the same way as I used to and am very conscious of how much it fucking hurts to kick your front wheel and fly over the handlebars as a result of 'popping out'.

Wicksie: the roc atacs are kind of between the aliums and the atac XS. As far as I know they are the same body design as the XS and XS carbon, but are heavier and aren't as fully featured. It seems that they don't have adjustable spring tension like the XS and XS carbon, but then again the picture on chainreaction seems to suggest that they have the exact same flathead screw, so maybe they do?
Either way the new design is superior to the aliums because its better at avoiding cloggage and the spring-loaded bars are beefier and therefore stronger. worth the extra money imo.

Thanks dude, would get the carbons if I could.
I take it times are still better than spds then. -
• #41
Times aren't better than SPDs. Just different.
If you like a pedal which has a lot of float and has good (the best) mud-shedding qualities, go for Time. Only downside is the lifetime of the brass cleats.
-
• #42
I'd say the Speedplay frogs are also good (the best) mud shedder. and huge huge float. ;)
just saying...
(and also very much nicer than SPD < time atac + speedplay frog)
-
• #43
I've clipped in and out of a Speedplay Frog before, and personally I would never use them on a fixed gear bike.
Your foot literally falls out of the pedal. There is no click, nor is there a snap OR a pop. :-)
I'm sure it's well secure and shit, but one thing I like about Times is the secure feel of clipping in and out!Anyway who am I to talk... I don't even ride fixed at the moment...
-
• #44
seen speedplays used on the track quite often. Dunno what they feel like though. I'm a bit OCD, if I don't get a decent click noise I have to unclip and clip back in.
-
• #45
Innit. I don't contest their use on the track, I just wouldn't feel comfortable using them on the road.*
Wouldn't feel good relying on them to stop.
*on a track bike

as mentioned today. Road Cleats and Snow do not mix well.
So close to bailing mid weave through traffic.
so embarrassing missing clip ins also. -
• #47
It's horrible innit.

That's handy, cheers Max.
I like a little float and don't need mud shedding qualities, so perhaps SPDs are the way? Confused now.
I'm using Keo's at the moment and it's defo not working. -
• #49
Get the Keos fitted properly.
I've used Atacs, no problem. I'm using Keos, and they're great. Apart from the "i need new cleats". -

I was speeding down Blackheath Hill the other week and thought at the top "I wonder what would happen if I just took my feet out of the clips, or they fell out?"... dismissed the thought because it would be fucking stupid and dangerous, started thinking about something else and then both feet fell out, with pedals repeatedly banging me in the ankles, beating off my shoe and front brake not working properly.
still alive though. player.
i've popped out a couple times doing epic skids. i think because, my feet naturally turn inwards, and do more so when i really oooomppfff it. my cleats are at a massive angle towards my little toes. anything less feels like my knees will burst.
