Looking for a griptastic front tyre

  • After a tyre, hopefully you can recommend something.

Ive been using an ultra-gatorskin on the front, which I stuck on there last winter. My only experience of grippy winter tyres has been gatorskins, and experience has been pretty good grip-wise. Just think there may be somthing better suited as a front tyre.

The ultra gatorskin is a very robust long-lasting tyre, this is something I really do not need at the front. All I am after is maximum grip and a bit of puncture protection.

So was just wondering if anyone knew of a tyre with MORE grip than a ultragatorskin for a similar price (about £17) I am willing to sacrifice a lot on durability.

    Ideas?

    Thanks.

  • I haven't used one, but Maxxis Refuse have a good rep on here.

  • Continental GP4000 are supposed to be good.

I now have a Vittoria Randonneur on the front aswell as on the rear for winter, and so far it's been very good. But it's 28c so maybe not for you.

  • rubino pro

I was just thinking about this tday, I'll go for the conti contact (28c winter), it's like glue.

  • Im going to migrate the gatorskin to the rear (it still looks new) and want the front to have more grip than the back. I wouldve been up for switching to 28c but I do not want the front tyre to be fatter than the back one (25c)

  • gatorskins don't have as much grip as a four seasons tyre plus the carcass has a higher tpi so it deforms easier and gives more grip. the 4000s with the black chili compound is very grippy (make sure you get the 's' version).
gatorskins are very squeaky in the wet.

  • <3 gatorskins

The Randonneur comes up like a 25C from other Mfrs anyway, you wouldn't notice the difference. If you'd asked me on Monday last week I would have vouched for the Randonneur's puncture resistance; now, not so much.

  • Conti GP400S is probably the best tyre on the planet in terms of grip. I swear by 'em and they're quite puncture resistant.

  • motherfucking 38c Vittoria motherfucking Randonneur:

so much grip, you'll wish you used velcro for the low rolling resistance.

  • Use them on all bikes. Grippy as hell - never had a puncture
    Cheap here

one plus, gator feel slidey after using grand prix 4 season.

+1 Really grippy, good in the wet as well.

    +1

  • I've tried the Maxxis Refuse for a week, it was really grippy, but I can't tell whether it's more or less grippier than the Conti GP 4 season.

  • I recently switched to Maxxis Refuse as well. Really like them, they feel solid without giving a hard ride. Very grippy.

I didn't see a man hole cover this morning when going round a corner, the front wheel slipped on it, but then recovered. I had thought I was a goner, but twas saved by the Maxxis.

Roll with 4Seasons and Rubino Pros on other bikes, can't knock them either, very impressed.

I won't ever go go back to GP4000s, they wear out to quickly. When they do, it's puncture season.

  • Vittoria Open Pave clincher. Designed to grip on cobbled, shit strewn Belgian roads, it laughs in the face of greasy UK surfaces.

I think the Refuse has a GFS* of 6. GP 4 seasons are around 7 and Gatorskins rated at 5.

  • specialized nondos or whatever they're called. IMO much better than rub pro, gp3000, gatorskins.

Mate you dunno what you talking about, you need to get a grip of the situation!

    Don't tread on me.

  • Don't tread on me.

Good god it isn't like I spoke to you that rudely.

My front Rubino Pro let me down (quite literally) last week so I am going to get some Veloflex Pave tyres for the same reason.

  • Anyone know the difference between Continental GP4000S and GP 4 Seasons? As far as I can tell the 4 Seasons are longer lasting but heavier... is the grip roughly the same? The GP4000S have the Black Chili compound which according to their marketing is the best thing ever invented, but the 4 Seasons have some other compound. Cost seems exactly the same, don't know which to go for.
