The idea of justice is about everyone getting what they deserve. When people pass bloodthirsty comments like the above, they basically mean that it would be just for someone to suffer A, B, and C because they deserve(d) it. If people feel oppressed, as many cyclists do, they are typically inclined to wish bad things on someone whom they perceive as oppressing or oppressive, in this case a car driver.

The underlying view in this is something like: He/she oppresses us, and must therefore be better off, as only richer/more resourceful/better/superior people oppress. In order to be taken down a peg, in this case for his completely unacceptable driving, he deserves harm, and it is therefore just to wish harm on him.

Now, of course, the driver's driving was completely unacceptable, and he should be pulled up for it and ideally be convicted of the appropriate charge, but the problem is that (a) it is certainly not clear that people who feel the need to oppress or are victims of motor dependence really are better off, and (b) whether even if they were it would be just to wish them harm.

Rather, we should wish him that he will discover cycling and enjoy its benefits. To be parsimonious with wishing people good outcomes, even if they do wrong, is never a very good strategy. To wish serious injury on someone is disgraceful, especially if they have just punished themselves for their own stupidity. Everybody deserves good things to happen to them, and it is often precisely because people are deprived of them that they do stupid things like this driver's dangerous driving.

The bloke was a fucking idiot, he risked people's lives for (if our reasoned assumptions are right) some light entertainment - through his unthinking stupidity and aggression he fucked himself and his car.

This is all good, he managed to not kill any children or adults, and removed himself - hopefully for an extended period of time - from the position where he can do that again.

That's about the end of it, we can rationalise and intellectualise the situation, and it would have been nice for everyone - the driver included - if he acted with a little more empathy and compassion, but he didn't and fucked himself - pretty much the best outcome as far as I can see.

And nobody is 'wishing' harm on anyone - what is being express is post hoc, he fucked himself, people are saying "you stupid cunt" - they are right.

Your comment about his car being 'something that can kill' is a very good point, couple that with "people who are responsible for looking after other people" and I think you have the basis for my own position.

If this guy was randomly firing off a gun for the sheer thrill of it, and I was taking my little kid out to show him the squirrels, and this guy accidently shot himself in the leg before he managed to accidently kill someone - I would only think that was a good outcome, to see him taken out of the equation.

Nobody wants this fucker wrapped around a tree, not even himself, but that is where he put himself and it's a better place than in court for putting a cyclist in a wheelchair or a grave.
