  • Another favourite of mine was Stratego

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratego

All the weirdy beardy kids used to play risk but this was so much better. And I kicked arse at it :)

    Risk.

    Rule 1, start in Australia.
Rule 2, appear to pick on the weaker opponent but keep the stronger opponents border forces limited.
Rule 3, Build up a massive contingent near the weaker opponent "in preparation for a massive offensive".
Rule 4, Wait until the weaker opponent is fighting for survival against the stronger opponent and redeploy suddenly.
Rule 5, Begin the annhilation, crush foes beneath your feet etc.

  • I was always amused by the type of people who were good at this game. The geeks always used to get taken apart by my one friend Luke. He was a dodgy fucker, ended up in prison and whatnot. But he was unbeatable at this game. Very odd. Kind of like poker

I think it's better to control South America first. Slightly more difficult, but better launch pad. Getting through Asia was a pain.

Oh, and Rule 6: Be incredibly lucky at rolling dice. :) I didn't win at Risk often, but when I did, that's why I won.

We recently played a game of Risk again and were really disappointed at how badly it's aged in comparison to newer, more innovative games. But back in the day, it was an all-nighter.

  • And just wait until you discover all the EXPANSION SETS ... :)

    Korean version, nice.

I 've seen em but so far resisted, the korean version is miles better quality then the english one, you get nice wooden holders for the cards and all sorts. Unfortunately the rules are in korean, so playing this one was a tad confusing.

  • can you play these games online? we could have a tourney.

  • you can play settlers here, Java Based http://games.asobrain.com/

  • You can play most of them on-line--I have Settlers and potentially access to Catan Online World, but I've never accessed that. When I play with others, I prefer to meet up in a real place.

Kind of but like backgammon and yahtzee there's a big element of knowing what to do with the numbers that you get. I watched a game played between one person using four sided dice against people using sixes and he stayed on to second to last.

  • Of course if you wanted a really challenging war game then really it had to be Warhammer 40k. Proper military style strategy and precision required there.

  • Indeed. I must admit I was slightly put off by venturing into a Games Workshop expecting that they still sold 'other' games, and being completely ignored by the staff and assorted hangers-on playing a huge game of Warhammer in the centre of the room. :)

How did you manage? From my experience, Settlers requires a lot of rules clarification before you really get going.

This forum just attained a whole new level of geekiness .

This would be insignificant to you if you'd experienced me at the gaming table.

  • I dont doubt this :)

Games Workshop used to be very good, a very long time ago, for games although always harboured a preference for Role Playing Games and fantasy based stuff. Unfortunately it changed it's business model in the '90s and focussed only on it's lucrative wargaming lines (It also abandoned the TSR distribution rights which was a bit of a nail in the coffin for D&D in this country until Waterstones realised that pasty dice rollers were also often fairly frequent page turners). It has made efforts to get away from the tabletop systems but unfortunately it's staff, many of whom are dedicated geeky tabletoppers, don't help much in this.

If you want a really good shop then Playing Games on Museum Street is about as good as it gets.

  • Stratego was ace

I am currently obsessed with Super Scrabble, double the letters double the fun.

  • Settlers of Catan (all expansions),
    Axis & Allies,
    Carcassonne (all expansions),
    Ticket to Ride,
    Puerto Rico,
    Risk.

Any of the above plus a country pub on a Sunday, class.

  • Nobody likes Monopoly, then?

  • I like Monopoly, I just don't like the people who play it.

  • I've played Monopoly too often to still be bothered much. Obviously a classic of classics, but there are games around now that I like a lot better.

  • I have cycleopoly!!!! It's based on rides from around the world. Yep, I know, it's awesome.

  • Nice.

Admit it, you only bought it because it nearly had 'polo' in the name. ;)

  • Er...I was a big fan of hungry hippos?

Drinking settlers FTW, 7's and knights.
