  • quite an expensive answer really ^
@zed - what happenned? you just couldn't make it work? :)

  • It never works. First problem is the total compromise on gear choice and second is that a chain length changes too dramatically over it's lifetime that it will either be too tight or too loose a lot of the time.
I found the whole thing dangerous when I tried it 6 or 7 years ago as one week the chain seemed fine, the next it was coming off when going down a bumpy hill - not nice...

  • you're right. my experience with magic gear was on mtb, and tension did change consequently, but i guess with freewheel and a disc brake it's not that critical as on a fixed gear

  • I've got a brand new 130mm ENO hub I might sell to anyone wanting to use a nice bike with vertical dropouts.

  • £?

  • No idea. I'd have to find out what they sell for here.

  • Do you want one?

  • 12 pack of JD & coke?

  • £130 here and I have a hangover so booze ain't gonna work for me, so, err, no thanks.

  • I'm still in bed. Ruined.

I'll pass on the eno. Argos may have to go.

  • I'm tempted to put track ends on it if you pass it onto me, Ved.. I don't really have the patience to build it geared.

current paypal exchange rate shows GBP130=$216.87
with SRP at $175 and $140 at pricepoint, i'd say - pricey!..
or did that include worldwide shipping, sorry?
i guess we'll all have to wait till hangover passes...
    :)

  • Whatever. I just grabbed the first price I found when I googled it.

£125 is the cheapest in google shopping

  • oops...
however, hippy, i apologize for troubling you with my "smarty-pants" comments, i didn't mean to... i actually thought they were like $200, so maybe next year they get even cheaper, and i can finally afford one for my MTB instead of filing down another hub axle :)

  • I use UK pricing since ordering from the US is likely to get stung with customs.

Remember US prices do not include VAT.

  • half links is the only way and you'll have to live with the "slackness" until you have enough chain wear to put a half link in.

other than that.. Eno hub is the answer...

filling flats into axle ? no, i wouldn't do it.

I filed flats into the dropout rather than the axle so it had a little movement, about a 1/4 inch either way but it was an old mtb frame so i wasn't bothered about knackering it. worked perfectly though.

  • does running a worn chain not increase wear on chain ring and sprocket? I remember replacing a well worn chain (12 1/4 inches for 12 links) on my old spesh hardrock a couple of years ago, first time i had done anything like that - new chain still skipped and jumped over the chainrrings like crazy when pulling away, replaced the chainrings, sorted. Don't know if the worn chain specifically caused increased wear on teeth or if it was just concurrent age / distance related wear which would have occurred even with unworn chain.

From my knowledge, chains wear out at the same rate as the rear sprockets, and the chainrings last about twice as long. So, if the chainrings are old, simply fitting a new chain won't work. This is because the leading edge of the chainring teeth has worn down in correspondence (but with a ratio of 2:1) with the chain.
