Ade,
Where could one find out more about this? I can't really figure out what causes the wild variations in price for items seemingly in similar condition but from different licenced manufacturers ...
I studied Furniture design so a lot of its in my head (often my own version!) from books. 1000 chairs by Charlotte and Peter Fiell is a good reference book to get a feel for whats what and when it was made etc.
These days there is an awful lot of info on Wiki etc for the production history of the better known stuff and the people like Vitra and SCP who sell the new stuff will usually have an explanation of materials and production history etc.

1000 chairs is good but there is alot that's in there that you will never ever see and alot that is not in there. you need to go to fairs and museums and see the originals. touch them even if possible. when you see old and new side by side it will be glaringly obvious to you why there is a price difference.
sorry if i missed something.

agree but what I'm talking about could well be old next to old or new next to new ie two liscensed chairs from different places with the slightest of differences in detail as organicorigin proved with his knowledge of the difference between HM and Vitra.
1000 chairs is probably best as a beginners guide to get a general feel but you are right there is little lesser known, cheaper items in there it's generally the well known pieces. -

original is best... as the designer originally intended, we have a funny thing in england with licencing basically letting anyone maek whatever furniture they want - a good example is the recent fallout with jacobsen and mcdonalds,
a flagship store in london decided to have a redesign and put some erne jacobsen egg chairs in there to make it seem plush - mcdonalds loved it! but jacobsen did not and kicked off claiming that mcdonalds shouldn't be allowed to use there iconic design piece in their shops as it would devalue them (these things cost a few grand a pop)
Mcdonalds being the sly bastards they are though got the design rolled out to hundreds of their branches around the country with cheap asian copies of the jacobsen chair.
doh. not fair on the original designer at all and legally nothing they can do about it - a lot of asian copies out there based on the original designs very different to the originals in manufacturing technique, materials and heritage!

An interesting point but Jacobsen died in the seventies and do you know what I reckon he'd have been ok with it. The chair was designed for a hotel and how can you be so fascist about who buys your furniture? It;'s the company , not the designer trying to make it precious and therefore keep the prices up. Serves them right it got ripped off.

agreed!
i think they were lucky to get a new lease of life - they hadn't been cool for years, then bigbrother used them and i bet that increased their sales - this however is just greed... however a copy is a copy and to me it's way worse than buying pirate cd's or dvd's or handbags from a dodgy market

its the high number of chairs like these from the book and the charles rene mackintosh chairs that you will not find in a junk shop. it was almost as if they were padding out the book by including some of the chairs they did.

after 50 years the patent is up and anyone can make it if it's past 50 years, that why le corb, e.gray and the modernist pieces of the 30's were big in the 80's and why eames jacobsen knoll etc from the 50's is being cheaply made in china now.
it kills the market and collectors move on.
i've dealt in 1st production eames pieces for 10 years and most collectors have sold it on to buy prouve or brazillian pieces as it's not as obvious and is far more expensive thus making it more desirable.
my best find this year was an original prouve jib wall lamp that i picked up for £350, it's worth 10 times that.

prouve furniture looks so substantial but understated.

Sunbury Antiques Market?
My sister had a stall selling vintage costume jewellery and used to get a lot of it there. Apparently they have all sorts of stuff, furniture included.

I missed out on a job lot of 12 eames leg splints a few years back never been out of the paper and stored in a wooden crate, I think the seller dealt in army surplus and had listed them as "wooden leg splints" found them with an hour to go (ebay) was uanble to bid as it was open to US bidders only, tried to email the seller to open up to worldwide bidders, no reply, went for a crazy low amount around $200 if i remember correctly, that was a sad day :( heh heh

prouve's grasp of form is simply amazing, as you say substantial but understated, the book cases he made with perriand are amazing.the only thing not understated is the price.
people keep finding a warehouse full of leg splints from time to time, there great items.
i still love eames furniture even though it's over exposed, i've packed alot up and put into storage for a few years.it's the eames rocker, banksy print set who kill it, they will do the same with bikes, pushing the price up, the fixed thing is already a london cliche.

I went to see an exhibition of his stuff this year (maybe?) at the design museum.
As a non-design person, it struck me as fucking nice.

kempton antique fairs is one of the best tips you will get. first and last tuesday of every month. starts early and there are dealers from all over europe there specialising in virtually everything. the best of the best is sold before it gets there - or at least so it seems as there are always rosewood this and nelson *that *that are tucked behind the stall that they say are sold really early, but if you find a good seller and pay what they ask they will probably look after you in the future. its huge and you can spend a small fortune there very easily.
earlier today i was somewhere and the person in front of me was told that the things the were buying were going to be 112.00 they asked if they could have them for 110.00 i thought to myself why are you asking for 2.00 to be knocked off, that is so unnessasary. -

they had the house (maison tropicale) there didnt they? I'd have loved to had a look round that
yeah the leg splints look great, I've got one hanging in my hallway people always ask what it is, I think they just presume its a sculpture :)
