  • my bike is a fixie but road legal of course...

  • They're designed for tuffs, plastic wheels and will be shit.

  • I think I'll give those a miss then, thanks for the heads up

  • try swissstop, they do green ones are some of the best

  • sorry to noob.

But i've got a miche brake (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/miche-performance-57mm-drop-brake-calliper-set/) right now with bolt through pads. Clearly i need some new pads. Looking at the cool stop ones but not sure which i need as i've bolt through and no brake shoes to just put pads into.#

These in salmon the business? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=46439

This - put some on a couple of weeks ago and have been impressed.
It absolutely pissed it down last night on my ride home but the swissstop greens were exceptional in the wet - very little noticeable loss of braking power.

  • i got some koolstop pads for sale here for £4. bought them on the forum and ended up not using them. just want the money back.

  • Been using HALT - Gooey - Red (soft) compound on fresh mavic CD rims

Actually better in the wet than the dry. And in the dry, not amazing, but then they are 80s single pivot brakes, tried the same pad on a bike with modern brakes and they were miles better obviously.
Wearing at a reasonable rate, faster than your average shimano insert, but then they are not chewing my rims up like shimano's would.
Feel very soft under the lever though, almost endless amounts of 'squidge'

  • Thanks but also need for another bike so just going to order a bunch online.

  • Swiss stop yellows on the new wheels- wearing down visibly every time you brake.

Worked as well in the wet as in teh dry however- although this is possibly because I was going very slowly, knees knocking with fear as I picked my way around pot holes I could barely see.

Are these 'the green ones to have'?

    My pads are knackered :(

  • yep, those are the ones

  • Cheers

/trotts of over to crc :D, or actually to find them the cheapest although tha seems a fair price

  • Just for future reference - these swiss stop green pads fit tektro r580 original carrier thingys.

Will report on how good the are after tomorrow's ride home, I'm hoping good for 23 bastard quid

Pretty much a year on. And yup, they are now useles.
Bike has been stored indoors over winter, but still used regular enough (few times a week). The compound started off super soft, almost silicon rubber like in texture, but a year of use (maybe only 1200-1500 mostly dry miles) and they aren't that worn, because they have turned into solid blocks of hard useless plastic.
They now have the stopping power of nokia 3210's, and about the same softness. Avoid. Get coolstop salmons, or swiss stop greens, nothing else is worth a damn.

  • Just plopped in some Kool Stop Salmon inserts into my Campag calipers. Increased stopping power quite a lot, especially at the harder-braking end where the Clarks pads I had before tended to reach a limit in stopping power.

  • just gotten halt gooey ones recommendation from CRC - last ones i got a recommendation from them one were cheap and really really good so hopefully these will do the job

  • ^^ Update on the Kool Stops: I was doing low-twenties and had to jamm the front brake on when someone walked out in front of me. Much stronger braking force than expected; I accidentally did a coasting endo for a few meters!

  • best value for money brake pads for carbon rims (carbon surface)?

    or top 3 suggestions?

    cheers

  • Reynolds blue are widely regarded as the best pads for carbon tracks. Very good modulation. I have a set and feel their performance isnt much different than my swisstop greens on alu rims.

  • 2nd Hovis comment .. Reynolds blue here

  • And I take it SRAM caliper would eed the Shimano fitting (not campag)?

I've got a pair of Shimano pads for Carbon rims that I bought by mistake if you want them for a fiver...?

  • SRAM caliper would need the Shimano fitting pads

Shameless advert ! http://www.lfgss.com/thread87054.html .. my part used swiss stop yellow

  • This threads a bit old but figured it was the best place for the question...

I need some GOOD new brake pads for all round riding on Alu Rims. I came off a couple of weeks ago at 65kph, it was raining and although I know it was largely rider error (too fast) I genuinely felt like my brakes had no traction in the wet - I was using cheap generic pads. Since then the only time I've felt confident going over about 45kph is when I've been on my carbon wheels with Swisstop Yellows. Obviously I don't want to be using my race wheels year round, and this is my training bike so I don't want to faff changing pads around the whole time so I need some good pads that will work on Alu rims in all weather conditions.

Swisstop greens seem to be the top option but they are expensive - I'm happy to pay but is this the best option? Are there pads that are (a) better all round quality and (b) better value?
