I quite like this thread, the OP posts that he would like to convince his girlfriend to ride a bike by page one everybody has interpreted is as to force.
I convinced Jaygee and myself that we should get bikes two years ago. I had been talking about it for a while, years actually. I liked the idea but was scared of traffic, Jaygee thought it would be a phase and that the bikes would end up rotting in the cellar. We now have two bikes each and ride every day.
Awwww, you and Jaygeeeezus always remind me of this song:

i say get her a lovely singlespeed with brakes or a flipflop hub so she can go fixed gear when she feels comfy. (not a mountain bike, but something that looks lovely and minimalistic ) then ride for a picnic or a along the river - something enjoyable and stressless... :-) it's all about having good times, and sharing a lovely activity :-) hooray have fun! :-)

i just finished yesterday the first bike since a long time for my girlfriend, and its a fixed-one!
i bought here an old frame i knew she really likes, got it powercoated in a color of her choice, build it up with her together and when it came to the ssp or fixed question she was like "iam going to try a fixed-setup" cause she tried my bike out before and liked the feeling.now iam a bit jealous at my girls bike, because mine brake down and i have to wait for a new one, also her bike turned out to be a really sexy beast...

People have, to a large extent, the ability to exercise freewill. If you're girlfirend wanted to ride a bike I'm sure she would be capable of communicating this fact to you, or whoever else she may feel comfortable discussing it with..
People also sometimes enjoy discovering new things and can be resistant to them at first. 4 years ago, I didn't cycle at all. Now I own 2 bikes, ride 100s miles a month and enjoy it very much. It took someone else to get me into cycling and I'm very grateful.

After a couple of minutes call out her best friend's name.
And ask her if she wants another cup of tea...

i can't believe how touchy some fucking people are on this forum, in particular running an ultra-PC-instant-burn-the-sexist-when-an-issue-comes-up-regarding-females sense.
lighten up you cunts, and read and understand before you jump to conclusions.

definately the softly softly approach is gonna work best, youve gotta appreciate that a lot of girls (not all) arent going to enjoy the general everyday grind of commuting like a lot of blokes do. Ive met plenty of girls who want to ride, but many more who cant stand the idea. Pretty much every girl ive been with has been interested in my cycling but has absolutely no desire to take it up in the same way. As was said above, use your cycling as some 'me' time and enjoy your time together not cycling.
If she wants to she will, if not then it would be rude to try and 'convince' her. -

I tried to get my girlfriend into cycling by getting her a old Mixte road bike with drops, she rode it with me a couple of times but just didn't like the thing, mainly riding position. The new bike we got her was a much more upright town-bike affair, with flower decals and everything, next thing you know she's asking when we can ride for Teddington up to Brick Lane again.
If she loves the bike, she'll want to ride it. Try to see what her vision of a great looking female cyclist is, and help her emulate that.
