  • Im not seeing the corelation between the economy and an increase in cycling deaths. It seems tenuous at best to suggest that the only reason for more people cycling is because of the reccesion. Pretty horrible statistics whatever the reason.

  • Is the "20 times more likely to die" statistic accurate, or did they merely look at total deaths of drivers and compare that to the number of cyclists killed?

  • All this screams out to me, bad riding style and habits.

In the article it explains lorries are involved. Simple, dont ride up against large vehicles, including buses. That Im sure would reduce the number of accident.

The rise is attributed i think to the increased number of 'stupid' cyclists that make regular bad judgements. Iv been riding for years and not once have i had an accident with a vehicle. Only 1 accident in total, and that was my fault 9minor injury). Learn to read the road people.

  • More cyclists = more accidents. Simple.

  • cycle training will make people safer

  • but srsly, a lot of cyclists are absolutely mental and seem to have no desire to continue enjoying cycling for any length of time.

  • but srsly, a lot of cyclists are absolutely mental and seem to have no desire to continue enjoying cycling for any length of time.

Do you mean reckless when you say mental?

  • i think he does.
mental cycling is like skill, reckless is with out due care. or summin

  • I agree. Mental cyclists are a danger to themselves and everyone around them.

The more cyclists there are, the more bad apples that will appear. Same for cars, motorbikes etc. Maybe not electric cars - they are a better breed of person.

  • You don't have to be a mental cyclist to have a serious accident. I am living (thankfully) proof of that. I found out today my accident was entirely my fault according to the cctv footage, and that has been a mighty bitter pill to swallow.

I will be following Dancing James's example on the cycle training, got to be worth it. I can't ride for another 4 weeks following the doc's orders but the pull to get back on the bike again is so strong - everytime I see someone ride by.

  • im a 'mental' cyclist, and i havent had an accident in over a year, i must be lucky or very skillful :).

  • im a 'mental' cyclist, and i havent had an accident in over a year, i must be lucky or very skillful :).

    then take cycle training.

I don't know if you're a supersticious person, but you'd better touch some wood, quick. The "it'll never happen to me" mentality soon comes crashing down once you have a bad accident, I can tell you.

  • Counter-intuitively, more cyclists means fewer accidents.

Safety in numbers: more walkers and bicyclists, safer walking and bicycling
    P L Jacobsen

Conclusion: A motorist is less likely to collide with a person walking and bicycling if more people walk or bicycle. Policies that increase the numbers of people walking and bicycling appear to be an effective route to improving the safety of people walking and bicycling.

More cycling is making UK roads safer
    Oct 20th
CTC has welcomed news that an increase in cycling has made it safer to cycle on UK roads.
Basing its figures on Department for Transport statistics, CTC estimates that cycle use in the UK has increased by 10 per cent since 1993, and that the rate of reported pedal casualties has decreased by more than 34
per cent over the same period.

Roger Geffen, CTC campaigns and policy manager, said:

"The relationship between increased cycle use and reduced cycle casualties found in mainland Europe also holds for Britain - the more people that cycle, the safer it is to cycle."

    http://www.bikebiz.co.uk/news/22045/More-cycling-is-making-UK-roads-safer

The more people cycle, the more aware drivers become and the safer the roads are for cyclists.

    CYCLING MAKES ROADS SAFER!

Recent statistics gathered throughout the UK confirm that an increase in cycle use leads to safer roads. Apart from the fact that drivers who also cycle tend to be more aware of other road users, more cyclists on the road ensures that even drivers who don't cycle are more likely to expect the presence of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

    http://www.cyclingscotland.org/didyouknow.aspx

After all, the more people who take up cycling, the safer it will be for all road users, not just for cyclists – hence the conference title:

“Safer Cycling = More Cycling = Safer Cycling = More Cycling = Safer Cycling = More Cycling .....”

    http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4802

Perception is a big problem here," says Wilson. "Unsurprisingly, many people think cycling is dangerous but it has been proved that the more cyclists there are on the road, the safer it is per cyclist. Drivers get used to them."

    men·tal ** adj.

hmmmm im not so sure, i have always thought that im way to cool for cycle school. Isnt the craziness just part of the fun though? it is for me.

btw, im not supersticious one bit.

You'll be even cooler in a fridge in the local morturary..........

  • spindrift commed. Great work.

Don't buy these sorts of scare articles--given that crash stats are never put into context, these articles are desperately easy to write.

As I said in another thread, experience suggests all that they probably show is a huge growth in cycling nationwide, which is potentially fantastic news, but we still have to await a proper analysis for confirmation of this.

  • S(lightly) S(tupid) Hopeful?

    you got it :)

I think you confuse cycle training with the cycle proficiency test you did at school not long ago, the former is much more useful than you'd think.

  • I think you confuse cycle training with the cycle proficiency test you did at school not long ago, the former is much more useful than you'd think.

lol I have never done any 'test' involving cycling. But, is it really necessary to try and improve your cycling if currently there is nothing majorly wrong with it?

I mean, ok so i am a bit of a speed demon and Rlj etc. but i do it with care ( if that makes sense) and surely the fact that im still here living and breathing is proof of my capabilities while having been in no accidents while others who have done the cycle training are involved in 'regular' accidents.

  • The rise is attributed i think to the increased number of 'stupid' cyclists

there certainly does seem to be some stupid cyclists around

even experienced cyclists here on the LFGSS found the cycle training to be massively useful and they learn new method that'll not only benefit themselves but to other road users as well.

even if you do RLJing with care, why the urge to in the first place? what's your rush? you're still going faster than motorised vehicles.
