  • ewan macgregor and charlie boorman been there already innit

  • yowzers, Corny. amazing trip ahead! this goes without saying, but you'll be missed.

  • When reading a map in Japan, North is not always on top. Instead it's from where you're standing. So better check for the arrow that indicates North to not get Completely screwed up with directions.

Also, should you happen to go into a Ryokan to do Onsen, make sure that you check for the Kanji signs before you enter the bath rooms. It often occurs that they swap female and male rooms to give you a chance to see both. Problem is if you cannot read Kanji, and you walk in naked until someone turns around and then runs out of the room in panic because they never have seen a Gaijin naked.

Imagine the hooha when its a chocolate gaijin :-o

  • hehe

    big in japan

  • temperatures permitting...

  • Our very own Brycelyall is leaving in a few weeks to go back to Auckland.
He's a good contact to hook up with.

  • wow corny! sounds amazing. best of luck on your travels.

  • so rad, man. you are gonna have to add philly to your list and stay with me! (only 2 hours from nyc- $10 bus ride!). if you need a play to stay in san fran (well, oakland) some of my very best friends from uni live out there and i'm sure they'd love to have you. also can hook you up with places in nyc. though i figure that north america is still a ways off..?

  • I can recommend a lovely Ryokan in Tokyo that is reasonably priced and pretty.
Very jealous, I did something similar 5 years ago - but couldnt afford to do it for a year.
You will love it - it was the making of me.

  • Nice one mate!

Are you going to Blog or Tweet?

  • wicked! i have done a couple of global wanderings myself and you will not regret it.

what sort of bike are you taking? the logistics of getting buses / trains / flights with a bike are going to be slightly tricky.

perhaps a folding bike (airnimal springs to mind) or packing a bike into a box / bag everytime. but that will be a major hassle.

alternatively a proper tourer with bike mounted luggage, but that means riding most of the way and just getting flights where necessary...

i am interested to hear what your plans are. what sections are you planning to cycle?

you will have an amazing time... i wish i had a bike with me when i was away... i hired wherever possible. always the best way to see cities and also the best way to get out in the middle of nowhere and really explore.

  • There is this Mexican restaurant you have to try in Vancouver, I'll look up the name, but its the best Mexican food I have ever had. I'll grab LA tips off some mates from there, and let me know when you are in NYC.

Also fuck Miami go to Cincinnati and see king records, then leave for Memphis.

  • don't forget pete is in osaka

  • Also fuck Miami go to Cincinnati and see king records, then leave for Memphis.

    You've changed your tune, bitch!
Besides, Corny ain't goin' nowhere... I've nicked his passport...

  • Awesomeness Big Man. Can't wait to hear some adventurers tales.

  • super exciting corny! i spent a bit of time in buenos aires, will rummage in my memory for recommendation.

  • see you in the Valley!

  • Good Riddance.
I always thought you were a bit of a loser anyway.

  • Sounds class. Give me a shout when you head down under. In fact you should time it for the Tour Down Under. Got a spare room you are welcome to. I'll be leaving my job the week before and checking out the tour.

Warning: It will be hot as hell then! It's already 37 degrees and it's only spring!

  • Cornelius, if you need a place to stay inbetween Rio and Buenos Aires, i live in Curitiba in the South of Brasil, run a little bike shop, so let me know if i can help you....

NYC> London> The rest of the world> Flordia.

    sorry if I missed something.

  • Mdizzle I may take you up in that, how far away is curtiba from rio, would be nice to see more of brazil than just rio, internal flights cheap?

  • Curitiba has a lot going for it.

    http://www.dismantle.org/curitiba.htm

mdizzle will of course be aware of how much of this is hype and how much reality, but I've always heard good things about the place.

  • corny, you can get a coach from BA to the iguazu falls, which are on the border of argentina, brazil and paraguay and are amazing.

then for me i think it was a 12 hour coach from there to florianopolis, on the coast. curitiba is about the same distance from the falls, so i guess about the same time to get there. i got a pretty cheap internal flight from there to rio.

thoroughly recommend florianopolis too - beautiful old colonial city half on an island and half on the mainland, connected by two enormous bridges. also dune surfing and famous for its beaches.

  • Internal flights are cheap if you book in advance, Rio is about a 1.5 hour flight from Curitiba, or about 8 hours by coach, express coach with beds is about 50quid, plus they will take your bike if bagged up.
Could probably hook you up with some people in Sao Paulo, Roberto told there was a shop with NOS DP18's so you could stock up as well. Come and ride our ropey concrete velodrome, then go to Rio and ride their swanky wooden velodrome.
