But if you can get a "regular" phone number instead of the 0845 number then you can use your mobile talk plan minutes which often don't include these sorts of service numbers. Obviously it all depends on circumstance :)
True, however if they are using a network based ACD the system will not have a regular (normally called a geographic) number.

I'm with Virgin Media for home phone and broadband. I'd say I'm getting a good service for the amount of money I'm paying. They've yet to ask for a bill and I got it in August. I'm expecting to be stung with a big one when they eventually find out they're not charging me.

The fucking TV has just stopped working.
I am absolutely astounded- how can they be this shit?!
It really is beyond belief, cable is meant to just fucking work, it's not like a bird can sit on the fucking ariel!
CUNTS!
Feel your pain Dammit...
if you've just signed up tho you are legally allowed a 14 days 'cooling off' period where you can cancel at any time. i.e cancel all direct debits at the bank, re-pack all the crap they've given you and send it back recorded delivery to them with a strongly worded letter. You can also go to OFCOM (or is it OTELO now?) if its over the 2 weeks since you took the contract and basically ask them to mediate as they 1 can't provide the technical service you bought from them, and 2, can't provide you with the means of resolving it directly yourself (if your experiences are like everyone else's then this will prob be the case).
Also, log every phonecall/name/call duration/promised callback etc as this is really helpful in proving you've made a reasonable/concerted attempt to resolve it, and is very valuable leverage when arguing with them.
good luck!

Why is their service so hit and miss? Is it down to individuals or something systematic?
-

Oliver: if you mean customer service: In my case the main issue was trying to get through to the right person and getting an engineer assigned to deal with your problem. The call centre is in India and a complete nightmare to deal with, like Dammit said; it can take anywhere up to an hour to get through and they're not willing to take any action/take ownership of your complaint.
Going through their CEO office seems the most logical thing to do because it seems that if it doesn't escalate they don't seem to be in a rush to fix things.
Their product in general is good, apart from the one glitch I've had internet from them for over 6 years now. But when it goes wrong they seem to be terrible.

I've now had an email from the CEO saying that he'll get someone to sort the situation out, and a call from the executive office saying that they are in the process of sorting it out.
Fingers crossed!

Yay! It'll all be fine in that case (from previous experience).

Signed up to Virgin Media this morning and just saw this thread pop up. Bit worrying.
One thing tho they have a money back guarantee, threatening to invoke these usually gets them listening.
Money back guarantee: The 28-day money back guarantee is available for new customers and existing customers taking a new service. Call us within 28 days of service activation to cancel and we'll refund the first month's charge and any installation charge. You will only be charged for transactions (calls, texts, purchases, service upgrades) occurring after activation. Statutory rights not affected.

Hey Jaw, it might be that Virgin is just totally shit in the nw6 area? My friend has a flat in William Dunbar House (just on the left after you walk across Queens Park bridge) and he's had to have Virgin round 5 times to install his correctly - and it's still not right.
Another friend who lives just of Salusbury Rd has had similar problems and in the end the actual regional manager came on a call out and installed everything himself. It seems like if you complain you do get somewhere with them...

Mine is fine now, dammit is in South London and it looks like his is getting fixed now, it's easiest to email the executive office as their customer support are useless, are you going to the Irish to today?

I live in the hinterland that is the SE24/SE22 border and it was there ready and waiting, is it normally quite hard to get in residental streets then? I glad VM has worked out for us anyway, were at the end of out tethers with BT, the phone line had been cutting in and out daily for over a year with the usual excuses about it just being a temporary problem with the exchange, which won't happen with cable.

interesting - nothing personal, but do you have a waitrose/pizza express/starbucks/artisanal bakery that doubles as an art gallery on your high street perchance?
/virgin hates mmmorleys!

I live in the most dilapidated house on **** **** ****, we don't have a high street. Our house is actively devaluing the neighbourhood, as well as physically dragging it down with epic subsidence.

I used to have Telewest before they became Virgin, and the customer support was pretty decent if unspectacular. Dealing with Virgin afterwards was eye-gougingly awful though.
(Also: Zen internet were wonderful when I was with them. Proper technical support that answered the phone and were actually helpful, even when dealing with obscure kit that they didn't provide)
