  • To be honest nothing beats lyrca for any decent length ride, but you can always wear some baggy thinnish trousers or shorts over the top, if I'm only commuting or anything up to about 20 miles jeans, cargo trousers whatever I'd be wearing anyway.

  • Ah - I'm having this very problem - heading out to Japan in 3 weeks - It'll be 20-30 degrees I've a 30k ride to and from tokyo each day. What to wear!?

I'm also wrestling with buying some RX-1's and toe clips just so I don't have to wear clipless pedals (I got a pair of six six one shoes with spd but they're really not very good).

  • Mind you don't have stitching in the wrong place. I'd just wear knicks underneath rather than cut out a chamois.

  • fashion update darlings !!!

  • You can make money doing that... http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/hell-yes/

    Thanks Fella,
Actually I have been contemplating making a few in average sort of sizes and putting them on ebay, to gauge what kind of response/price, I'd get. My skills with the sewing machine are still in need of honing but i recon they are good enough. I'll get some photo's and whack em up here soon, see what you guys think.

  • If you ask me there's a market for a plain, baselayer fit merino t-shirt... with jersey style pockets sewn on the back.

I'd say go easy on the logos/branding too.

  • I personally like to dabble in the world of Tesco value.
Tesco value jeans = £3, cut those bad boys into shorts and roll them up a bit. Grimey!

  • Mc Hammer pants FTW!

Merino pockets don't work though. If they get wet or you actually use them then they sag badly.

    Other than that I agree.

  • Rock the fanny pack problem solved

  • I do thanks.

Good point. Making the pockets from an expensive material isn't ideal either. I might try using lycra for the pockets.

  • Erm ok.... so most of you guys/girls know I am a bloke of the "larger variety".
I've been getting a bit fed up lately with wearing jeans when cycling, the whole getting soggy and sticking to you when wet thing, no waterproofing or wind resistance etc etc, and they just ripped through the crotch yesterday, second pair in 4 months, its getting annoying, I wear base layers for my upper body and they work a treat, i'm beginning to think my lower body deserves the same kinda treatment as soggy legwear is really starting to put a dampener on my riding (pun intended).
Anyways I am thinking of picking up some kind of half decent replacement for my jeans thats more along the lines of proper cycling clothing, but i'm not 100% on the whole tights/leggings thing.
To be honest i've never owned a pair and the prospect of clothing myself in Lycra isn't exactly appealing, do you guys wear shorts over the top of them or what, basically i'm looking for some kind of recommendations here, what tights, what shorts, what kind of half decent technical clothing should I wear thats gonna be more comfortable when riding?

  • try out the swrve wwr 3/4's

  • I'm thinking something a bit better suited to the winter?
Don't a lot of you guys wear tights and then shorts over the top or something?

  • For the days where the temperature is below 10, I got myself a winter bib from wiggle, and shorts of your choice over that to not look like catwoman.

Very decent, keeps knees warm and all. Winter riding not a problem.
When the temperature drops to around zero I usually wear merino base and mid layer, bib & shorts, jacket on top, big hat that covers ears and some winter gloves. Toasty and warm.
The padded part of those bibs is much better than the padded shorts I normally wear.

Not sure about the 'larger' body layout, as I am a weedy programmer guy, but yeah, with shorts over it won't bulge too much I guess.

  • It has been rumoured that some male forum members do wear these.....

  • Just get some lycra, you big jessie.

  • MTB waterproof shorts + tights or kneewarmers is a popular option, although the combination of non-breathing shorts + super roubaix ( fleeced lycra) is far too warm IMHO.
A cheap option (what I do) is too use a pair of really light trekking 3/4 shorts (dirt cheap at Decathlon) on top of wherever the weather/distance dictates: nothing, padded shorts, running tights (again very cheap at Decathlon) etc... Cycling specific clothing tend to be more expensive than other sports and it's not always justified.

He's just gone clipless, he's getting there.

  • Ok guys, thanks for the advice, I just bought some Endura bib tights, comfy and hopefully up to the job :)

  • I can't do the mtb shorts + kneewarmers thing. I don't shave my legs, so the kneewarmers end up sliding down and bunching over my knee. They're fine with cycling shorts, due to the extra gripper (of the shorts) holding them in place.

I suppose I need some sort of garter belt. No-one else would know, and I could feel all deviant and sexy whilst commuting.

    Sound choice

I was thinking on days that I want to look like less of a roadie wannabe I could always whack some of these shorts over the top of my bib tights also a bit of extra warmth if it gets a stupidly cold, TBH I am so naturally warm most the time I rarely go for more than a base-layer, I only take jackets with me if I know i'm gonna be sitting out in the cold for a long time.
I don't shave my legs either....thats just a step too far for me.

I would know, I tell when you are being a sexual deviant, I know the signs.
