Reads as follows:
Dear Harriet Harman,
as a passionate cyclist in London I was shocked by the recent accident involving a left turning lorry on Peckham High Street.
This is one of a series of accidents involving lorries and women, with many of them being fatal.
Cycling is the best way to get around London, but it must be safer for us, especially for people that are easily intimidated by traffic like my girlfriend. In order to address these problems, I'd like to ask you to sign this early day motion concerning the closure of the CVEU by our mayor, which is a step in the wrong direction:
EDM 2144

Yours sincerely,

The site may take a day or two to update (so his name won't be there yet but will be added, so don't email him!) but thought I should add that I've had a very quick reply (1 hour!) from my MP already:
Happy to sign. As a cyclist, I'm very concerned about lorries that can't see bikes and support all measures to make cyclists safer.

I'm not surprise Boris closing the HVG inspection unit, he seemed to be discouraging cycling than encouraging despite sounding passionate about it.
even Red Ken encourage cycling better than Boris, Boris just pick up what Ken left.

Thanks for the links and how to. I wrote mine, although as a Yank here on a visa as a family member of an EEA National, I'm not certain I'm eligible to vote so I probably carry little weight. Although I suspect my MP won't know that and I have a decent enough Anglo-Saxon name to appear to be legitimate.

Done, thanks for the heads up.

Done - wrote to mine today.
That said I wonder if it'll do much good. I'm not so much being negative as recognising that my local MP is a crap driver and almost took me out yesterday by slamming on then pulling to the left hand of the lane after overtaking me in order to execute a right hand turn. Oh and then she indicated. None of this Mirror, Signal Manoeuvre crap for her, at least I should be grateful she hasn't been diddling her expenses.

Maybe I'm not understanding the political system and checks and balances here. I wrote my Member of Parliament who, according to that website ,is Jim Fiztpatrick. This is what he wrote back.
Dear [D. Generate],
Thank for the e mial. I am sorry but as a Minister I cannot sign EDMs but I will follow this up for you, not just as your MP but as a fellow cyclist and former Road Safety Minister,
Best Wishes, Jim

Dear Nicholas Clegg,
I am writing to you to ask you to support Early Day Motion 2144.
Whilst I am aware that London is not part of your constituency, I spend three days a week working there, commuting by bicycle.
It is clear that KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) incidents in London are involving HGVs at a disproportionate level, and as such, I feel that to withdraw funding for the Metropolitan Police Commercial Vehicle Education Unit (CVEU) will grave consequences (pun very much intended).
Whilst I am aware that public funding is at a premium in the current economic and political climate, there are plenty of examples of a move towards self-funding within the Civil Service etc., perhaps you could encourage Mr Johnson to pursue such avenues, and offset the operational costs against fines for non-compliant vehicle operators.
Yours sincerely,
{Landslide}
Feel free to use elements of mine, though as the website notes, don't use it verbatim, as they have filters to stop copy+paste letters...

Eh?
He's correct--EDMs are for 'ordinary' MPs to raise issues and ministers can't sign them. Still, as he says, he will follow it up, so it's very good that he's putting some political traction on it.

Same goes for Mr Clegg apparently (as a party leader), but the response said that the Lib Dems are supporting the EDM.What that means in practice...?

I'd guess it means that they'll instruct their MPs to sign it.

There is another letter here if you need t use it: http://www.seemesaveme.com/wiki/index.php/Lobbying_Work_Group
I was told by an MP today that all EDMs fall next week so it would make sense to put it in after queens Speech. Was great of Diane Abbott to do it regardless. Just gotta get as many signing it as possible now I guess.
The EDM regarding the permit system for lorry drivers will be raised in the next parliamentary session.
Step 1
Go to: http://www.writetothem.com/
and find out who your member of parliament (MP) is
Step 2
Then go to: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=39378
See if your MP has signed the form. If they haven’t tsk tsk
Step 3
Contact them using: http://www.writetothem.com/ and ask them to sign the Early Day Motion.
Tell others! Apologies if re-post, just heard about this method from roadcc and blogged about it
