  • Just discovered the magic of Spotify on Android - amazing. You need to have a paid-for Spotify subscription, but if you have one of those and an Android phone, try the app!

    Technology is bloody amazing...

  • Eh? If you're talking historical market leader then clearly it matters, but if we're talking current market leader, by which I mean most sales in the past year, then age has nothing to do with it. I was talking the latter, not the former.

  • Anyone owning the Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica, can now load the latest Andoid 2.1.

    http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i5700_galaxy_spica_gets_android_21_ready_for_download-news-1517.php

hippy will be along shortly. ;)

  • That's the i5700.. not the i7500.. which is smashed anyway. I'm waiting for N1 to arrive here.

Samsung seem to have abandoned i7500 but there's 2.0 available for it:

So, you are in the UK on T-Mobile (NYSE: DT), you are using a Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Android phone, and you want OS version 2.1 – when are you going to get in on the fun? Well, Electricpig.co.uk has come up with the good and has what it says are ETAs for the supported handsets!

Right, first off then is the G2 (aka HTC Hero), which is getting its update at the end of April, or start of May.

Next, comes the Pulse Mini, which is getting Android 2.1 around 23rd April.

Lastly, the Samsung Galaxy Portal is getting its update at the end of May.

A spokesperson has explained that for all devices that can take 2.1, they are working with vendors to ensure it happens – good news, for sure!

  • And to cover more bases, Sony Ericsson are to launch a qwerty-keyboard version of the X10. Much smaller screen though.

At half the size of the full X10, this is certainly a more pocket-friendly phone. Certainly cute, if thats what appeals to a buyer.

Full name: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini / Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini Pro.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is is finally out today....on T-Mobile online shop. In the high-street shops next week.

    EDIT:
When I said "out", it referred to coming off the Coming Soon page, and being in the Phones page.
Sadly for me, T-Mobile are still awaiting stock, or I'd have one already! 24-03-2010.

  • T-Mobile seem to have jumped the gun a released all phones due in April today, the Desire was also available on their website.

I am going to get a Desire fo shiz homies. Saw a demo today, you can't hear anything but one press of a button changes the weather.

    Look at 0:16

Weather can now be controlled via pocketable technology.

No one tells me about this shit, I wondered why there was a battery rammed up my bum.

Excellent spot dogs. I've been championing Android from the get-go, and owned the T-Mobile G1, but I had no idea the pace of Android development and growth would be this fast. I said it long ago, but no matter what Apple have in store, I just can't see them keeping up.

And here was I, moaning about how I couldn't get an upgrade to a Milestone, then the less-than-up-to-date (but still really impressive) Xperia X10 turns up, and now maybe 6 months away, the HTC EVO4. I've been holding off my upgrade since November, to get an Android phone I want. I don't think I can wait another six months.... Still, there's always next year's upgrades. ;)

  • Right, so I'm after some general advice from the android peeps. I live in France, and got rid of my iphone when I moved in january. As much as I loved mine, the best contract I can find is 120€ a month, for 2 years, with unlimited everything (including international mobiles and landlines). Plus 280€ for the 3gs 32gb. The next price down is 80€ a month for 2 years, 120€ for the phone, and 240 minutes!!

I can either bite the bullet and stump up the readies for the iphone, or look for an alternative. I was going to go for a sim only deal and buy a phone on top, but then had second thoughts.

If I go for the iphone on the contract, then sell it (700€ sim free in the shops, so I should make a profit on 280€) and buy something android.

Is it worth waiting for the new htc GA2G just posted, or is something else coming soon?

Things I need: music playability, functional european satnav, microSD would be nice, and decent browsing. Emails are necessary, but I don't envisage too much by way of writing, so a qwerty keyboard isn't necessary.

If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear them!

  • @Malibu. That HTC Desire youtube video is showing a (Linux) Compiz style background. I wonder if its just a background, or a functional UI? Compiz on Android would be special.

  • Wannabee, you'll want to keep in mind, that Android contracts are normally sold with a special always-on internet deal. This is so that its always live, as opposed to most phones which "push" updated info as you request it.....Emails, Searches, Downloads, etc. Don't know about French tariffs, but the first one, though expensive, sounds an absolute winner....with international calls included to landlines and mobiles. I don't think I've heard of that over here, or anywhere else actually.

  • Yeh, I might just get an iphone after all...I'm a sucker for shiny things. I didn't appreciate the android deals are always on, I don't know precisely how things work here for tariffs, I'll have to waste a precious saturday in a shop asking stupid questions of someone who knows even less than I do.

The unlimited tariff is about the only good one going, more normal deals are extortionate. France is the most expensive country in the EU per minute of mobile talktime, apparently. The big operators got a big fine for just dividing up the market in formal meetings (!), more than 200M€ from memory. They're busily shafting everyone as much as they can before the party comes to an end. The sooner the better.

Looks like I should just carry on being an apple-whore...

    thanks for the advice, btw!

It's not doing anything of the kind, it's just an animated desktop wallpaper showing 3d wire frames. Please don't confuse wire frames with compiz, they are very very different things.

  • @Wannabee, Honestly, iPhones are deeply inferior things. Only being able to do one thing, or have one program running at a time is laughable.

@VB, honestly, thats why I asked, because it did look like a background/wallpaper. I'm glad you quoted me, as it shows clearly what I had said.

    RUMOUR MILL OVERDRIVE!!!

Xperia X10 will be upgraded to 2.1, or 2.2!!!

    CDMA = Europe fail.

Best option for any smartphone is unlimited web browsing.

There are apps you can install on 'droid phones to lock down all data transfer, roaming, 2g, 3g, wifi, etc in any configuration you need to make the most of an inferior data plan.

    Yippe!

I too have been following Andriod from the start, got the g1 on contract but now there are so many offerings on Andriod, I seriously don't think apple will be able to keep up. The best thing on andriod is you don't have to spend an absolute bomb and you still get a very nice phone.
    Long live Android!

  • HTC Scorpion anybody?

Rumoured 1.5 ghz processor, Android 2.2 (Froyo), and WiMAX.

    And more concretely:
