I'm also on the hunt for a new small phone. My Sony XZ1 Compact is currently held together with tape but apart from age my only real complaint is the limited storage (32GB). Otherwise for me it works fine. It's 129x65mm and IP65/68. I'd love to get as close to that as possible. Any suggestions?
I'll look at the Moto options at John Lewis and pixel(6a?)

Most of the newer Moto's aren't small (they seem to be longer and narrower than a pixel 6a) but my partner has the G54 and it is very good, has 128gb storage and feels light in the hand.
I have a Pixel 6 which feels much heavier/chunkier than the G54. -

I have had a Pixel 6a, (128 Gb storage, as advised by @festerban below), for just over 2 years. When new it had problems maintaining a GPS fix,
(which was a demerit as I routinely track bike rides). This was fixed by a software update.
Originally the battery had trouble lasting a full day, (not that I spend all day on the 'net, and I don't game), just listening to podcasts, some tracking, and a few photos.
Again, the Android updates, (its is now on Android 14), have resolved this.
A couple of times in the Summer, the phone has shut down because it got too hot.
I have to routinely transfer podcasts and photos/videos to my laptop to avoid filling the 128Gb of storage.
I'm considering replacing it with a newer Pixel:
better camera, potentially more storage, and a longer guarantee of Android & security updates. -

Ta. I remember there was some discussion about robustness and waterproofness a couple years ago, someone who took their phone on site maybe? And hippy. I have appreciated the water resistance and reasonable drop resilience of my phone several times.

My S10 is nearly 4yo and my contract was sim only, just upgraded to S24 for minimal price increase thanks to broadband switch combo discount deal.

Damn. Add to the small, waterproof, shock resistant wishlist a desire for a headphone jack.
I'd be up for a NOS of the same phone but the storage limit is getting quite tiresome. Why do these things have to bloody change?!

MicroSD expandable?
-

Yeah I do but not all apps can be moved over and it seems 32GB just isn't very much these days

Got a pixel 9 as it's less than pint a week more than my 6 was costing SIM only and although that's still going fine, my mum could do with a phone so will pass that on. 9 seems essentially identical after setting it up identically. Corners are a bit too round but I'll get used to that. Not really had time to test camera etc. I'm sure everything will be slightly better and I guess I get software updates for ages now.

Anyone here familiar with open source phones?
BraX3 over on indiegogo specifically.
Intriguing, not super expensive either. -

Ugh no NFC otherwise I'd probably buy it right now
-
• #23265
Yeah I don't use nfc, so I'm struggling to see why I shouldn't go for it...

I've got a 6pro and it doesn't seem old or any issue. Mad there's a 9 already.

I am in the same boat, my 6a has been great but is now starting to struggle to do some basic functions. The charging port is also very temperamental so some mornings I wake up and it hasn't actually been charging despite plugging it in.
Main contender is the Pixel 8 which is £400 at the moment from Bezos (sorry) as I don't need a lot of functionality and it comes with 7 years of updates.

Have you cleaned it out with a needle or so for fluff and contact cleaner?

Tempting. Hadn't spotted that model, seems comparable to Motorola G85 but a bit cheaper and a bit better. I was considering a Pixel but if I'm honest with myself I'm far too clumsy with phones to warrant spending that much.

8 direct from Google is the same price I think
-
• #23272
I've read that you don't lose much with the 8a and gain better grip if you don't use a case.
-
• #23273
I think 8 is £450 and the 8 Pro £500 direct, Amazon has one combination of colour and memory that is £405 for the 8. 8a is £50 cheaper but I feel like it's maybe worth it to spend a bit more for the 8 to last a bit longer...?
Edit. it's new but a return hence the 10% off...hmm

Cheap Pixel 8 deal (£229.60)
What do you mean modern software? I'm running the same shit I do now.
It's not like I'm complaining about some crazy 3D game. I mean literally waiting for it to boot, swiping around, loading the clock or whatever.
