  • Any ideas on a good android phone for a small handed daughter, about the size of an iPhone 7.

Current phone is a Google pixel from about 3-4 years ago. She does not want another iPhone :)

  • another pixel, but an 'a' series one, failing that im sure Moto will do something

  • Thanks, I'll have a look at them :)

  • Well that's quicker than I expected! Claim was approved on 2nd November.

  • Mine was on the 5th so hopefully get this soon.

Best get my arse to JL and test out these 'ere headphones and make a decision sharpish.

Just in time for eBay £1 listing too at the weekend...

I'm going to keep them. I was pretty happy with my QC35 II and reviews for the 700s are generally positive. Touch controls will no doubt be a faff and not as portable though.

  • John Lewis are going to be pleased by all the footfall in their electronics department!
I need to get down there too, I have quite a large head & my memory of friends Bose headphones is that they were always sized quite small, so need to make sure they fit before I open the packaging!

  • Well that was quick. First impressions, they're solid. Feel a lot sturdier than the QC35 II, I have a right melon head and they fit me fine. First 5 mins with touch controls and they're alright actually, sure I'll get used to them.

Might be better/truer sounding headphones out there but these are grand for me, 30 seconds out of the box they were connected and working, no fuss at all.

  • I see reports that some are now being informed they are getting upgraded headphones qc45? and £45 Google store credit due to lack of stock. Interested to see what I get.

  • Contactless payment. The Barclays app, for all its many many faults, allows contactless payments without unlocking the phone. Do Google Pay and/or Samsung Pay allow that as well, or if I switch to one of them am I entering a world of "oh bugger sorry the phone is locked sorry sorry" pain?

  • Pixel 4a you can tap to pay without unlocking with Google Pay, shows a little credit card icon on the lock screen to remind you its on.

  • Ah thanks but I'm not looking to change the phone itself (S9), just the payment app. Or rather, I just got a galaxy watch and need to switch to an app that is compatible and doesn't turn making a contactless payment into a two handed operation.

  • I'm quite sure if nfc is on then I can pay unlocked. S9 user. Sure a Google will confirm

  • Brilliant, thank you. Your google-fu is better than mine, I just got lots of links telling me I needed to set a lock screen to use google pay but unlock it to actually pay.

  • contactless payments without unlocking the phone

I'm surprised this is a feature, seems a bit risky. I've never found unlocking my phone to pay an issue with a fingerprint sensor.

  • Google pay seems to require unlocking for larger transactions. Small ones not.

Makes sense if you cf to a contactless card with limit.

  • It's just the same risk as contactless cards though isn't it. You lose your phone or wallet someone can go on a sub-£100 (assuming the shops have updated their machines) spending spree until you or the bank stop them.

Phone unlock to do transactions up to your normal account limit is then similar to putting your PIN in for card transactions.

  • until you or the bank stop them.

You have to enter your PIN every fifth consecutive contactless transaction. It's a measure to minimise losses when cards are stolen.

  • You have to enter your PIN every fifth consecutive contactless transaction

Not any more, it now seems to be driven by the anti fraud algorithm. I can contactless for weeks as long as it's in my regular shops.

  • Interesting, I can't with my card. Every fifth like clockwork for me.

  • I was thinking more in terms of phones being without limit on contactless. Also you wave your phone around a lot more in the street than your bankcard.

  • Doesn't happen with me using either my phone or my physical card.
With the phone I guess it knows it's me because I unlock it throughout the day in normal use, but the card I don't think I've put the PIN in in months! Maybe different banks have different rules?

  • Maybe different banks have different rules?

    Yes, they do.

  • Oh I see. They're only unlimited spend once you unlock them using fingerprint/PIN, otherwise they're capped to the usual contactless amount (30>50>100 through the years).

Interestingly my new Pixel 6 pays from much further away than my old Samsung, which I'm not convinced is a good thing.

  • Maybe different banks have different rules?

They do and they also have flexibility to give custom transaction values/volumes/cash withdrawal limits to individual customers.
