  • No, the ones where it captures a couple of extra frames to go with the photo. Kind of like a gif recorder.

  • Just gone and broken my phone. What's the best android option for less than £100? Priorities are decent battery life and relatively durability.

  • Secondhand Nexus 5x with a screen you need to replace?

  • Anyone interested in a 32gb Nexus 5x? Unfortunately, has a crack on the inside glass in the screen. Have bought a replacement screen which you can have gratis - never got round to swapping it over (would be roughly 35 mins job if the same swap on the 4 is anything to go by) .
Also, have a BNIB battery to go into it that I will throw in too.
    Does £80 sound reasonable?

Quoting from the last page - if you're interested, let me know.

  • Tempting, given my bad history with taking phones apart it's probably not the best of ideas though.

  • Stretch your budget a little and get a Chinese smart phone? Much more bang for your buck. Gear best and bang good for sites to check

I just got an Elephone P8 Mini for £130, it's good

  • I agree about the Chinese phones, I get a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x from ebay £160

  • My Pixel 2 should arrive today :)

  • You need to get on one of those black and white Pixel 2 buses when you've got it for the complete experience.

There seem to be plenty on the 242 route at the moment.

Hope you don't get screen burn.

  • Pixel 2 rather than Pixel 2 XL.

I was wanting to go smaller, and only the potential benefit of a better screen made me consider the XL. That appears to be a false benefit, so I'm glad I've gone smaller again.

  • Assuming the burn issues get resolved I think it'll be the XL come upgrade time for me. The only thing I regret about the smaller version of the original Pixel is the size. Held both at point of sale and thought the large was absurd and no one could ever need a phone that big, but given how practical the device is and how much work I actually do on it (a staggering amount which I really wasn't expecting) I've quickly come around to the idea that the larger makes more sense - even if I need to get bespoke XL pockets for my clothes.

  • Just hit go on a Pixel 2 too. Should be picking it up on Wednesday. First foray into android after 5 years of apple. I'm hoping for a revelation

  • Pixel 2 is lovely.

It has taken a while to set up, just the act of downloading 165 apps from the Play Store. But now it's pretty much there, it feels snappy, fluid, natural, intuitive. It just feels right, like the device is now not the main show, it's invisible, and your software, the apps... are what it is about.

It's only the first few hours, but it's lovely. The Pixel 2 screen (not XL) is fine too.

As for size, it is smaller than the Nexus 6p I had, but not dramatically. This is still a fraction larger than the Nexus 5x. This is about right for what I wanted.

  • ok you've convinced me. I do use lastpass (with yubikey) for almost everything. bank stuff still lives in keepass though. Having access on computers etc... would be nice.

Third Pixel 2 XL arrives tomorrow. hopefully the last for a while.

  • Redmi 4 (prime) for sure.

  • How's the camera on the redmi? Have to return my Elephone after recommending it yesterday(!) so will probably swap out for something else

Don't expect quality but is it quick at least?

  • The camera on the redmi x4 is ok for the price, better then the Willy fox I had.

  • Yeah it's quick, not the best quality but acceptable. Things improve greatly if you take the time to unlock the bootloader and install a 7.1-based rom (like Lineage 14.1, now stable on the 4 Prime) as you can then use the camera2 api with the Google HDR camera apk that comes on the pixel phones. This especially improves snaps in low light. Throwaway example pic of a big ole puddle:

  • Velocio's post up there made me think about android 8.1 (beta) on my Pixel 1 XL. The device does seem nippier since the upgrade which is very welcome. Also a few tweaks that I like, such as the Google bar now at the bottom of the home screen, which seemed odd at first but is thanked for by my thumb. No more streeeeeetch.

  • Awesome, thanks. That's a million times better than the Elephone. Do you have the 4gb version?

    They've disappeared off amazon strangely

  • I kinda lost track of the versions, I have the 4 prime with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and 1080p screen, which was the best I could get at the time (last summer). Was £120 off ebay and took around 2 weeks to arrive on a boat from china, though I could have got it quicker at around £150. Maybe the Note 4 is available with more RAM, but it's too large for me. Couldn't be happier with this phone tbh, the huge battery in particular is a godsend.

Edit: do use the glass screen protector, it's easy smashy and replacement screens tend to be shit.

  • nokia 2? <- not actually released yet though (only announced)

  • Also check which ROM is installed, I think the international ROM doesn't use the 4G band so look for the Global ROM which does. Or I might have that backwards. either way check.

  • Happy to report that TechintheBasket have come through with the phone, and seemingly a UK version too (in that it had a UK plug on it).

  • Still available? Interested for my cousin
