My problem is it's a US handset bought from a Chinese company and then imported into Australia... Not sure how that'll pan out for me, not very confident tbh...

I bought my nexus x5 from mobilesphonesdirect.co.uk spoke to LG due to the finger print not working and took them a week to replace it and also main board as it was faulty. this was all done free of charge under the 12 months parts warranty, so worth a shot.

I had assumed that the nx5 fingerprint scanner issues I've been having were a software issue, as they happened after an OS update? The fingerprint options seem to have disappeared from Settings too.

Thats exactly what happened to me , (dec Os update) did a factory reset and brought the finger options in settings and managed to get it working for another 3 days and they it disappear again. I contacted LG and within a week i had my phone back with new fingerprint scanner and main board according to what they said ( proven by a new IMEI number )

Damn - exactly the same thing for me.
Tbh, I can't be without a phone for a week - will probably just live with it until I replace it... then send it back for replacement and sell it.

I had a spare phone for that week, I did sent the phone on a thursday and came back the following wednesday, could well be 3/4 days if you plan it to be pick up on a monday.

did you have to submit a receipt, or just give the IMEI number?
-
• #18209
Both.

That seems odd, I wonder if there is something contextual in the UI that recognises that there isn't a usable fingerprint scanner so it hides the option?
I'm on 7.1.1 and still have the option in my menu and no issues using it (on a n5x obvs)

Why, when I search for something on Chrome on Android, even when I go to the page it seems to be redirecting me through google.
For instance this URLhttps://www.google.co.uk/amp/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_586e78b2e4b043ad97e206a6/amp?client=ms-android-motorola
rather than this
m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_586e78b2e4b043ad97e206a6/amp?client=ms-android-motorola
I can't see a way to get the proper URL without editing it manually. Is there an option somewhere or is this a "feature" of Android/Chrome now.

I am after a tablet for taking notes, the occasional silly game or 2 when I am bored on the train (hardly ever take the train so fat chance this will happen) and just the usual web browsing / youtube. I was going to get an iPad being an Apple fan, but I really don't see any point in investing £360 on some 2 years old iPad air / mini etc, and see even less of a point to get one of the iPad pros , so I have my eyes on this:
Any good?

It's AMP, AMP sucks.
Use Firefox on Android, search there and do not click the little lightning bolts.

How do you plan on taking notes? I find them less than ideal for that purpose generally. But maybe others have a system.

Replace your laptop with a Surface Pro of some description and receive the gift of proper handwriting recognition and excellent OneNote integration

Is there a way of diabling AMP?

Cheers, interesting read. Not sure why but I don't feel that keen on it.

I am very good at taking notes with a virtual keyboard, have done so for years. I can't handle my own handwritten notes, so @TomvanHalen, a Surface machine isn't going to help me in any way... Any when I say note taking, I don't mean pages of pages of minutes taking or being in a hours long lectures. I am doing my teaching at the min and all of the classes are group discussion, hence a tablet is good for taking notes and consulting Google, I think...

Sounds like you know what you want. Galaxy tabs are well regarded.
My note taking is for research, so the surface was perfect for my needs. Keyboard and pen marking of pdfs.

I did consider a surface pro after my Mac got stolen before Christmas, but then I ended up with another Mac (just used to a different system), more reason not needing another proper computer. I have been happy with iPad and Android tablets in the past, hence the Galaxy tab, but isn't it a bit too cheap to be true? After all Samsung is just as expensive as Apple on many levels...

If you're just taking notes via the digi keyboard, playing the odd game (but not the games), and youtube/web, I can't imagine it being an issue. I'd suspect you could go even cheaper. The only issue for your needs would be screen responsiveness, I suppose, and Samsung has excellent screens/digitizers in my experience.
But others may disagree!

I am a huge fan of the surface pro for handwritten notes. I have one with a heavily cracked screen but still fully functional that I could let you have a play with if you are London based.

Think I am gonna go for the Tab A, I did look at the sub £200 ones, but all seem to come with 1GB ram or thereabout, I guess that would really have an impact on the speed. Now I can finally get rid of my Chromebook that was bought as an stop gap between having my Mac stolen to insurance paying out...
Anybody wants a cheap as chips Acer chrombook? I'd keep it to use for note taking, but it's 14 inch = I might as well take my laptop with me...
The warranty here, via Google, is two years. so hopefully they'd honour that
