I have a plan for the something useful from NFC tags, but either need to find a good (discreet) android coder, or finally learn to do it myself.
If you think your idea has strong grounding and could be something quite unique, then it might be worth looking into NDAs and getting someone who's familiar with android development to sign and then look at / discuss your idea with you. Doesn't really come down to them being discreet if you do it that way.

Still better than having to get the card off the neckchain / out of wallet and swiping however. I can live with 10cm...
Won't you also need to have the phone unlocked / in an app for it to replace a key card seeing as you'd effectively have to be getting the phone to mimic the key card's chip?

Are there any good launchers/apps that make an android phone look and behave similar to an old nokia? I'm contemplating whether to bring my dad into the 21st century and replace his old nokia with worn out buttons and monochrome screen...
Either that, or I notice carphone warehouse have a 99p nokia with a colour screen!

I bought some NFC tags and was going to use then to turn on my Sonos system. Put a few of them in an unobtrusive place, one for each radio station i like. The fact that I haven't actually done this shows how it is bit a problem that needs a solution.

I like Apex Launcher (i use the pro version not sure which features you might want though) very configurable and you could easily set it up with lots of big icons, stop the screen from scrolling off the main page so he doesn't get lost, lock down changes so he cant move icons about or delete them and put 1x1 widgets on for specific things like call/text certain people maybe.
some decent icon sets available for it and the default themes are unobtrusive.

HSBC app - t&c's = no rooted phones. Also it requires stupid amounts of permissions (take photos ffs?) and they can't use special chars in passwords. So, what I'm saying is: HSBC Android app... do one.

the barclays one is the same, but you can use an older version if you sideload it while you have superuser switched off, then you have to switch off automatic updates in play store to stop it being overwritten.
have you had a look on xda-devs to see if anyone has managed it with the hsbc one?

I think perhaps you missed my point - I don't want to use it.
It's not even made by HSBC, it's some US company HTSU or something.
If I can't use special chars in my banking password then it's not fit for purpose as far as I'm concerned.

ahh ok.

I wouldn't mind an app which only showed me my balances and account labels without the account numbers. Sounds like something I could sign an agreement for inexchange for a root-compatible sideloadable APK. I wwould accept the risk of loss resulting from my balance info being "at risk" and that statistic becomes ineligible for any kind of with/security script.
Basic functionality for untrusted platforms, how hard can it be?

A reliable ATM finder app which allowed useful filtering like "free withdrawals", "serves £5 notes", "indoors vs onstreet" and bank/3rd party operator...
The banking apps all have it but with root I can't have it.

Ordered one this morning :) They are also doing double clubcard trade in on these, so got mine for £77!
I hope my nephew likes it... and doesn't trash it...

Also, it's cheap to unlock (as the tesco ones are locked to tesco mobile). About £2 for an unlock code from various ebay sellers :)

Thanks for the heads up, I'll play about with it, see if I can get something working that he might like...
I had him playing with an N4 the other day. It was... amusing :)

Had a look at a Moto G in Comet yesterday, for £100 it's remarkable.

I might get on as an interim phone.
Where could I walk into later today to get one that would work on 3?

I have a Moto G in my hands. It's not bad really. It seems it came with 4.3 out of the box though. Does anyone know if you can get an OTA update without having the phone set up? This is an xmas gift after all, so I don't want to dick about with it too much (though I can always factory reset it I guess).
-
• #13673
You can skip through most of the defaults, ie. without connecting to a google account or enabling location, etc. and then as long as you have a wifi connection or maybe use your SIM can download the update. I'm pretty sure this is what happened with my N5, before I'd even added an account.
-
• #13674
Also, you could just do whatever you want, install the update(s) and then do a factory reset which will take it to the factory state of the version you'd updated it to.

4.4 hasn't been released for it yet but will be "soon"
