  • Didn't take too long to get a workaround for the region locking!

  • Shouldn't have to though.

  • abso-bleedin-lutely!

  • I got Asus Memopad HD7 yesterday. Basically a revised Nexus 7 (2012) minus some processing power but with an SD slot. Really highly recommended, also priced very well at £130. Needed a new tablet since I gave the Nexus to my dad. Still looking for a mid range handset to replace the Xperia Ray.

  • Chrome on my N4 has started behaving oddly, I can't swipe between tabs anymore...

Anyone else having the same problem?

  • How weird. I can't either. Pretty sure I could the other night.

  • Oh, they've moved the swipe area... you have to swipe the top tab address bar... Seems to work.

  • Oh yeah! Nice one, I should've UTFG...

  • Ooooh. I actually prefer that. Got annoyed occasionally by switching tabs accidentally.

  • Glad that's cleared up. Had me confused this morning.

    Yeah, me too :)

  • You do have a point, hipster...

OSX Chrome is really fucking frustrating at times but my laptop syncs up quite nicely with my N4, so it's a keeper...

  • I only use Chrome for testing work now. Dolphin is my goto browser.

I bought one of these to go with it..

Yeah, I've been thinking about all that shit, I need a dummy's solution tho'...

  • Thinking of tablet - Samsung Galaxy 3 - yay or nay?

  • Samsung? Nay.

    Get the Nexus tablet.

General rule of thumb: Any tablet that runs vanilla Android rocks, anything that runs a flavoured Android sucks.

And a clarification on that: If you run a flavoured Android it may not suck today, but it will tomorrow.

They are just far less supported, have more quirks, the user experience isn't as well thought-out, not all updates are delivered in a timely manner if at all.

Stick with vanilla Android and the end-to-end experience rocks for as long as the device lives.

  • Although it will slow down, since you are able to install and run the latest and greatest OS as soon as it is released. This does not mean that your hardware is also the latest and greatest!

My gnex is starting to feel sluggish. Let me buy a nexus 5 already.

  • I still disagree. Non-stock tablets don't "suck".

Sure there's a benefit to getting updates but there's also a downsides as Google seems to be doing its very best to fuck up its applications - Maps are shitted now, Latitude is gone, they keep changing their desktop applications, removed
    Reader, Wave, Buzz, etc.

You can usually flash a non-stock tablet down the line if you want to.

You also miss out on some nifty stuff like the hand-writing recognition on the Note, for example.

Basically, updates are nice but they're not everything - what changed going from 4.2 to 4.3? I think I noticed one change.

  • Don't forget the awesome cameraness that non stock phones seem able to do.

  • Yeah, true. If stock hardware was so fantastic, people wouldn't be buying anything else.

Reason I ask is I can get a tab 3 8" with wifi and 3G (4G ready) with 2Gb data for £20 a month with Vodaflam

However, I could also pick up a Nexus 7 16Gb for £199 outright and just tether it to my phone!

The stylus and mutli task/split screen appeals though

  • Z1 F (mini version with 4.5" screen) announced in Japan, might be worth holding out for if you think 5" is just too big

    http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/10/ntt-docomos-winter-lineup-arrives-includes-sony-xperia-z1-mini/#continued

The Xperia Z1 f is essentially a miniaturized Xperia Z1 -- it has a 4.3-inch screen instead of a 5-inch one -- and packs in specs that are similar to its bigger brother, such as a 2.2GHz MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 processor and a 20.7-megapixel camera.
