  • Which android tablet should I get? Mainly for sofa and bed based browsing and Netflix

  • "ANT Wireless, proven innovator in ultra low power (ULP) wireless technology, today confirms that native ANT+ has been included in Samsung’s latest flagship product, Samsung GALAXY Note 3"

"The Samsung GALAXY Note 3 is the first to deploy the ANT concurrency feature – uniquely available to ANT in Android - which makes it possible for consumers to utilize a variety of third party ANT apps all at the same time."

This is quite interesting- I wonder if it would work with the RFLKT?

That's iPhone only at the moment, but they are talking about making an ANT+ version.

  • Nexus 7, new one if you can afford it or the old one for a few quid less if you can't.

  • If you're looking cheap the Nook HD 7 is decent for the price (£99), Has the added benefit of SD slot if you're planning to use it for watching videos.

Has to be rooted and custom firmware put on though (not very tricky) s the standard OS is a bit crap.

  • I've got a nook hd+ (9")
Not rooted yet, runs ok. The wife uses it the most.
    Fine for browsing/ Netflix

  • Nexus 7 2013 version. Fantastic. Best tablet out there atm

  • Doesn't seem like it would feel much bigger than my HTC OneX though. Was playing with the mother-in-law's 10" Galaxy Tab although those seem quite spendy

  • I still love my Asus Transformer for watching movies. The dock means you can be hands free and just rest it on your lap on the tube or on your chest while lying in bed.

    Not cheap though.

  • My dock (transformer prime) is broken and I can't charge via it anymore. It is now just a keyboard which is of limited value. The cost to replace is crazy.

Does anyone have a transformer prime dock that they don't need?

  • My name is Ludd and I'm not that good at modern technology. I've got a big desktop machine at home, which gets heavy use by all 5 family members. I've got an ancient IBM laptop running XP and with zero battery life and it's really slow, and I have an even slower Dell laptop that is about 10 years old and occasionally gets used.

Now Mrs Ludd says she would like a smartphone, and having recently played with her sister's iPad mini I think she'd also like a tablet. I'd certainly like one for email and general time-wasting browsing, perhaps also for BBC iPlayer and showing photos. I see craphone warehouse are doing a deal on a Samsung Galaxy Ace - which is what Luddlet #2 had until recently - for £13 a month upwards (depending on data/mins/text limits) and they're throwing in a "free" Galaxy Tab 7" tablet. Does that seem a good deal to folk here? Mrs Ludd currently pays £9 or £10 a month just for calls and texts on her elderly unsmart nokia.

  • Sounds like a good deal.

    Equally as good (if not better) is this deal though, buy a chromebook and receive a free samsung smart phone;

  • I've just recieved a Galaxy Sii + from work. Lost my lovely HTC one S. No sim yet. But its lost in the looks stakes.

    Any recommendations re routing etc?

  • Any recommendations re routing etc?

    Yes, use TOR and Replicant.

  • Did you mean rooting?

Heimdall or Odin to flash Chainfire's CFRoot kernel (includes Clockworkmod bootloader), then use Clockworkmod to flash whatever you like.

Backup and wipe before flashing a completely new ROM, but I can flash updates to Cyanogenmod without losing anything, just takes a reboot.

Using clockworkmod, clear the cache after flashing ROM updates.

Answer this simple question: Does Mrs Ludd use Gmail?

If she does: Buy a Google Nexus 4 (or 5 in 2 month's time) as a phone, and get her the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

If she doesn't: Buy an iPhone and get her an iPad.

That's pretty much it, no other factors need be considered... it all just works.

Don't bother buying a laptop or anything else... a decent phone and tablet in which the data is sync'd over the air and these devices stay in sync is all she needs.

  • Unless you like keyboards. I like keyboards and will continue to use laptops until such time that I stop liking keyboards.

    Yes. Sorry. And thanks

    I'll look into this.

    You're not Mrs Ludd.

My mother is terrible with computers, barely functional. I'm surprised by how well an Android tablet has basically solved modern day computing for her.

She was never a touch typist and doesn't even notice that she's still doing point and stab typing.

The number of people who actually need a laptop, desktop, keyboard and mouse is surprisingly few. But mostly comes down to power users and those who create content.

  • My Mum and gf can touch-type and I'm a power-user. My old man would have more luck with a laptop than a tablet for sure. Tablet generation >>>

    Keyboards are for winners.

  • Thanks all. While the apple stuff is all jolly nice, I'm not sure the budget will stretch to an iPad and iPhone.
Mrs Ludd is a touch typist but for most of that sort of stuff she'd be using either our desktop or her work laptop (new Thinkpad, I believe)

  • Mmmm ThinkPads.

    Awesome.

  • Just enabled 4G on my Nexus 4, hope it will work.

  • I'm considering ditching my iphone (when it stops working) and getting a Fairphone (http://www.fairphone.com/). Has anyone on here pre-ordered one?

I'm going to the launch next week (there will be some prototypes on show) and hopefully there will be a good response when the finished product is released in December.

edit - just did a search and noticed that a couple of people have ordered them, there are quite a few events happening at their Soho pop-up next week, hopefully I'll be there on Wednesday and Friday. The upgradable/modular ideas being floated around by them will be very interesting if they get implemented (we're probably quite a few years away from this happening).
