So, Chris King bottom brackets: I'm tempted to have a shot at a used one (steel bearings) for a reasonable price. Does anyone have experience with the serviceability of the bearings? After all, that's supposed to be a major selling point, and I don't have any issues with repacking the thing once in a while.
Does the promise of "high quality and if you service it, it'll last for a very long time" actually hold true in people's opinion? Looking online, I sometimes see very mixed reviews and it's hard to decide who to believe.

Thanks, but I'm talking about one of their more modern offerings, GXP to be precise. Anyone with personal experience?
-
• #97786
Gxp is sram
-
• #97787
Yes, I know that. How is that relevant?
-
• #97788
Right, and a lot of other places as well, but have they eliminated one of the best products in their lineup?
-
• #97789
That you suggested that it was a shimano standard the way you worded your post.
I just clarifying just in case

No, I'm talking about Chris King bottom brackets - they do a whole range of threaded BBs (with conversion kits) that can be used with cranks from different companies. Sorry if I worded it in a misleading way.

• #97791
Meh, just get a sram one.

They're the main UK distributor and nothing seems amiss.

Shimano have a habit of not listing everything they make on their web site. Lots of OEM stuff never gets listed, and even some stuff that's supposed to make it into the retail after-market channel.

Thanks both snotty and tester, bit of a relief.

Isn’t the big selling point of CK is that they make their own bearings? Or rather, have races made to their own spec, which have a large number of smaller ball bearings. I’ve never had to service one of them.

I think so, that and supposedly that it's user-serviceable and therefore lasts much longer over all. I was wondering whether it's actually worth it vs just buying a normal Sram GXP BB, especially considering those don't have the best of reputations in general.

Anything is better than a GXP. Expensive, with really poor weatherproofing so they wear out in no time - I’ve seen less than six months in normal use.

I'll agree and disagree, get the GXP adaptors and go with a decent Shimano BB.

Better still, don't get adapters and go with a decent Shimano crank 🙂
