    Come up with a better term then. Yes, it's a bit silly for an assembly of independent components, but there needs to be a term to describe the same set of functions when they are sold together as an integrated package consisting of proprietary components not interchangeable with anything else.

    It really is a case of trying to squeeze in something to help repair our backs before dinner.

  • Do coaster brakes always feel like crap?

    I have just put a second hand wheelset with coaster brake rear on a bike. although I quite like it as a novel way of modulating speed it is quite clunky. Can’t remember what they felt like the last time I used one.

  • You'll find people who defend the thing, but in my opinion, yes, absolutely.

  • My 1961 Torpedo certainly doesn't feel like crap - the brake shoe on yours may need replacing, or regreasing, or needs oil through the port, though if a modern one it may be crap regardless.

  • I’m guessing it’s a modern - ish velosteel hub. Not sure if it has one but I’ll have a look for a grease port. Standard hub / bearing grease suitable?

    It’s strong enough that I can lock the wheel when braking, and doesn’t make a horrible noise just feels quite loose and clunky.

  • If by crap you mean wicked skid machines, then yeah.

  • Lots of online stuff available for maintaining them, Sheldon is a good place to start, also torpedo-coasterbrake.com and hubstripping.
    The ports are generally for oil, but best to check for your individual maker.

  • Do you have any experience of yoga? I'd still recommend doing an introductory yoga course if not. It really helps immensely with understanding what you need to do. It may seem like too much of a time investment but it's definitely worth it in the long run. I always recommend my friend Rebecca's course, but of course there are millions of different places where you can do a course.

  • Yes. I love it. But never carried on because it's always too expensive.

    Right now, there is no way I can swing fucking off for a couple of nights a week to leave my other half with mini-hugo7.

    What exactly do you mean by crap? Just the brake, or the hub as a whole? The braking modulation?

    Over all they're average at best. You can usually adjust them a bit to make them weaker or stronger.

  • They feel kinda crap compared to modern hydraulics and cable pull disc and calliper brakes, but that’s not exactly surprising given they haven’t received the same kind of investment.

    Good though because they stop you reliably in all conditions and don’t make a horrible mess :)

  • Not crap just not used to the sensation I guess. Feels like the cranks rotate a fair amount before engaging, And they are generally quite clunky when operating the brake.

    At the moment they work and it’s fairly easy to lock up the rear wheel. Wanted to know how others find the feel of them. Sounds like they are what they are

    I’ll read up and might try and improve it at some point
