How do you guys feel about scavenging for parts? A few beater bikes have been locked up with a seat post/wheel/everything except frame missing near where I live for months not. Tempted to take a few pieces I need for a cheap project like brake levers and pedals.

I'm guessing no, but are all compression rings made equal?
I'm working on my road bike, and it's come back from getting the headset sorted at bike shop and I have no idea where the compression ring is. I've found a cane creek 40 one at work, will it fit at home? Bike is a principia, what looks like a rebranded chris king (to my non-expert eye) headset in there.

From a functional point of view there are two flavours, 36° and 45°. You need to use the right one.

Yes, but they are increasingly expensive and difficult to get hold of. Also, for some reason mine squeak against shoe much more than the others

Well, it will centre the bearing properly. The other dimension is height, if the new one is different from the old one you may need to add/subtract shims to get the gap between the cover and the head tube right, but as long as it's above zero that's more a cosmetic issue than a functional one.

What’s the best (cheapest, easiest) way to adapt a SSMTB to be built up with gears?
My initial thoughts were to braze on gear cable stops and derailleur hanger, but seeing as I can’t seem to find ‘braze on’ derailleur hangers suggests to me it’s not really a done thing.
Internal gear hub ie alfine?
Problem solvers bodge, one of those gear hangers that replaces the qr cap. Looks like it’ll not provide me with the full range of the cassette.

If it'll fit your dropouts I've got a set of (or at least the one with the hanger on it) DMR chain tensions that came with the first generation Trailstar way back when. Run it with a full length of gear outer as a 1x?

If you want to convert this SSMTB in to some kind of do-it-all commuter/shopper/gravel thing then an Alfine is fine, presuming the spacing is around 135mm.

Anyway I want to learn about mechanical engineering, which textbook should I buy? Something cheap-ish that covers undergrad-level stuff.

It's just cleaning out the threads of threadlock and gunk. I have a decent socket set with an extension as well as a Dremel.
