  • Anyone know what size nut I need to go on these headtube gear cable adjusters?

Head down to your local nut shop and try M5

  • Yes it was a silly question really, due to frustration, to which the answer was always to solve by experimentation.

What is Afghani (I think) for "thanks for letting me poke around in your enormous box full of random bolts, washers and screws. However as I originally expected to make this purchase from B and Q I forgot to bring any cash with me, and I'm pretty sure you won't take a card payment. I kind of hoped (but did not in any way expect) that at this point you would kindly wave me on my way with the 4 tiny nuts gratis. However, I will leave the items on your counter, walk home and back again with a pocketful of coins and hope you are off the phone, and/or that your colleague who's normally on the counter is back'?

  • What is Afghani (I think) for

There is no language called Afghani, most Afghans speak either Pashto or Dari (Farsi)

  • Google translate to Pashto and back to English:

Thank you that I was full of footwear, washers and screws in your big box. While I really expect B & Q to buy any money I have with me, and I'm sure you will not be able to pay a card. I'm very happy (but never expect it) At this time, you'll bring me back in my 4 for me. However, I will leave your home in the house, go home and then find pockets of coal and hope to call you, or your friends who are usually in the head.

  • That's what she said.

  • Car question.

Someone (not me) has put a big scrape down 3 panels of my car. They will pay to fix it, but it's a 2004 Meriva so getting the paintwork repaired properly will likely cost more than the car is worth.

On the other hand it is a nice little runner and just passed the MOT with no work needed, so I don't really want to scrap it.

Is there anything I do to make the paintwork less obviously crap and more importantly prevent rust getting a grip? I don't mind the paintwork looking obviously repaired.

  • Are the panels removable that have been scraped? For e.g. front wing and two doors.

If so, and you don’t mind the car looking a bit like a patchwork quilt you could swap the knackered ones for good panels off a scrapped car.

  • If "they" are going to pay for it why worry about the cost of repairing the scrape?

  • Get an estimate from at least two bodyshops and present them to the person paying. Then between you, you can decide what is going to happen. Repairs are not cheap but as it appears insurance is not involved you may be able to do a deal that's cheaper with the workshop.

  • Of my many problems, which will be solved with a Block-Chain Solution? H-Dac Technologies are very keen to help.

  • there is a lump of allen key in the rock and roll clamp bolt

    Have you tried magnets?

  • Brutally efficient.

  • Yes, bolt seems to be made of steel and the Allen key seems to be made of something non magnetic 😱

  • little blob of superglue/epoxy on something stick-like to attach it to the allen key ball? Just be careful not to glue it in there.

  • Because it is a friend who is hard up, so asking them to pay almost as much as the car is worth feels wrong. Insurance isn't worth claiming as she is on my policy so I will get shafted by losing the no claims.

  • In that case take it to one of those well established car wash/valet places. They might be able to do some magic for a reasonable price.
I've used a company called Little Knocks in the past and they were cheap and good. See if something similar exists near you.

  • Thank you, I will look for something similar.

@Dammit I will also see about the scrap option - was trying to avoid it because of having to swap over all the locks, and I don't have a garage just the street to work in.

  • No good deed goes unpunished :(

  • A friend is looking for a tote bag / reusable bag of any kind that can fold itself into a tiny pouch (about the size of a coin wallet thingy) and zip up. I have seen it before and know exactly what he is talking about but I cannot find it anywhere...

Anyone knows where can I get him some?

  • search 'foldaway bag'.
co-op sell them for a pound. paperchase do pretty ones for a fiver. neither zipped, if that's critical. but in a little pouch.

  • Decathlon do 10 litre backpacks that fold away to basically nothing for a fiver.

  • 85 alone wasn’t enough. I had to add the 97 too to stop the seatpost slipping.

Do 3T posts measure true to size, Thomson is not the 27.2 claimed but actually 27.1.

  • Thomson is not the 27.2 claimed but actually 27.1

If the seat tube is reamed to exactly 27.2mm (and given reamer wear and material spring-off, it's actually likely to be a bit less in most cases), then a post which is truly 27.2mm would need to be hammered in. Any sensible manufacturer is going to aim for posts to be 50-100μm under nominal to avoid such an interference fit.
