  • You seem like the sort of person I would trust :) as do plenty of others on here. I'll figure something out - it's no great loss (to the forum or me) if I end up selling things on one of the Facebook cycling groups.

  • is this thing genuine ?
    sold for $400NZ

  • Looks to be real, welds look agricultural lol

  • We have no domestic ID card or papers

Being from a country where everyone has one, how does this work? How do you prove you are who you say you are/not who someone else says you are?

  • Driving licence or passport.

  • How often is that required for most people? On the rare occasions it is needed, showing utility bills with your name and address, plus bank account details is enough.

We've local elections coming up in a couple of months, and some Conservative authorities are 'trialling' having to have photo ID to prove who you are before you vote. It's clear what this is aimed to do - prevent those of low incomes, who can't afford to drive or travel, from voting.

  • How do you prove you are who you say you are

How do you prove you are who you say you are in order to get your totalitarian government to issue your National Identity document in the first place? All you can ever do is prove that you are the same person as the person in a previous record, or at least that you can convincingly impersonate them.

  • Driving licence or passport

What's the principal difference between these and an ID card? Genuinely interested, seems to be a big issue to you UK-ians, implying going further down the Orwellian maelstrom, being a nasty Tory etc

  • totalitarian government

    See?

  • One of the objections is that our government is dreadful at large scale IT, and an ID card would not (as you might think) be a case of issuing a passport to everyone, it would be creating a third, new, separate database and associated systems, costs etc.

It’s also not cheap- if you get £30/week to live on then finding £80 for an ID card is not a top priority.

  • Ok @andyp @Dammit thanks for explaining. Didn't know the details. Wtf does the £80 get you and why a separate database? I suppose I could read up on this elsewhere but cba ;)

Edit: large scale IT- aren't all governments crap at this? Sweden is certainly a good example of this, clueless and behind the times it seems.

  • suppose I could read up on this elsewhere but cba

That's the subtitle of this thread
    : ]

  • Edit: lol way too late to the party

And I’m still not sure how to call them if I start a wanted advert here, haha.

The Belleville and especially Trial Piana look good though

  • having to have photo ID to prove who you are before you vote

Hang on... You don't have this already??

I think the largest issue is that there's no good reason for an ID card here, and plenty of negatives.

As AndyP said - if you need to prove who you are there are methods.

Of course, a utility bill and a bank statement are not available to everyone, either, but there are enough options that one can be found.

Our Driving Licences are de-facto ID cards, you could always simply issue a provisional DL to everyone at 16.

  • Nope, you have a card that arrives in the post that you are meant to show when you vote. But most of the time that’s not required.

Voter fraud in U.K. elections has not been a problem in living memory.

  • So you don't have to prove you're you. And there's no evidence of voter fraud.

  • Ok I'm just having a dig at you guys, I'll stop :)

Lots of ways to do stuff right. Just curious.

  • Voter fraud in U.K. elections has not been a problem in living memory

Really? Personation was part of the culture in Ulster, and there is a lot of election fraud in areas with large poorly integrated South Asian populations. It's not enough of a problem that National ID wouldn't be a much bigger one, but it definitely happens.

  • British people are famously honest. We have a genetic disposition to fair play.

  • Most obviously evidenced by our propensity to form orderly queues.

  • We have a genetic disposition to fair play

All humans have a genetic disposition to fair play within their tribe, cheats are outliers. If anything distinguishes our island race it is that a very long history of united self government has created a culture which engenders a sense that all Britons are one tribe.

  • It definitely happens, but there is very little evidence of it being a major problem that needs urgently addressing.

  • there is very little evidence of it being a major problem that needs urgently addressing

Agreed, it's a small problem largely isolated to specific small areas, which needs addressing in a leisurely manner by much less invasive methods than the sledgehammer/nut scenario of National ID.
