  • I used to have these, couldn't get them to work as well as I'd like but I had to work around a front mini-rack which limited the adjustment I could do. Switched them for CX9 mini-v's which were a massive improvement.

  • I'll back up @JurekB - Avid Shorty Ultimates are by far the best cantilevers I've used. The set up procedure takes a while to master, but it's well explained in the instructions SRAM provide. The level of power and modulation is far, far superior to any others.

  • Thanks for the discussion. So no consensus on the old cantis then - lol! It's for my Specialized Hardrock so not a high-performance bike by any means. Spending north of £100 on a pair of brakes (Avid Ultimate) isn't an option on this bike, so I might just go for something decent used of eBay like Shorty 6 or the CR720...

  • Do you need mud clearance? If not, just get a pair of mini-vs. Much easier to set up and better braking than cantis.

  • I genuinely don't know. "Mud" is a foreign word to me when it comes to bikes. It's for the aforementioned bike on a ride called the Dorset Gravel Dash. From Charlie the Biekmonger's website:

    100 miles in 2 days - A one stage, 2 days, largely off-road 60+40 mile dash across the county and back.
    You will need camping / bivi gear, and food.
    Mixed and very varied terrain
    Use any bike you want.
    Includes free swag, probably a t-shirt.
    Starts Saturday 26Th May.
    Ends 100 miles later at same location, on the sunday, leaving you bank holiday Monday to get home.
    Routes supplied via GPX file around one month before the event. Plug it into your GPS, or mark up your OS map.
    There will be minimal markers on the route. but you will need to navigate it yourself
    Terrain is mixed: dirt, mud, gravel, some road sections (sorry), chalk, tech, grass.... and maybe a puddle or two.
    Bike: a cross bike or MTB is ideal
    Gears: yeah sure, whatever you want to use.
    Climbing: lots, all front loaded to the first half, so that is your first day
    We will have a broom wagon to sweep up the unlucky and bring them back to the pub.
    This is not a race, it’s a reliability trial.
    You must wear a helmet and have front and rear lights. Some of you won’t finish in the daylight; we also get some thick coastal fog around here. Also read the T&Cs way down below.
    There will be a pre event briefing which everyone must attend. This is likely to be at 8.30am on the day of the event.
    Expect no marshals on route, expect no food stops, but we may have something.

  • I'd risk mini-vs. If they get clogged you can always stop and remove the blockage, as it's not like you are racing and every second counts.

  • Considering these for the rear of my pomp currently. Which I am also planning to take on the Gravel Dash - not been before but it looks ace

  • It currently has Shimano mini Vs which are powerful but very on-or-off, as soon as you pull the lever the rear wheel skids, with no 'feel'. That's with compression less housing too. Plus they are a nuisance to set up because they need to be massively close to the rims

  • (I know going from mini Vs to cantis is not the done thing on this forum)

  • Compressionless housing will give less "feel".

  • But without it you get even less pad movement so they have to be even closer to the rims

  • Are there any mini-Vs that clear an MTB tyre? With road-pull levers?

  • ^ I also did wonder this. Happy to with mini Vs because I have them on the pomp.

    EDIT just looked at the pomp and those brakes with my 2.2" tyres would be a squeeze.

  • Can't you all just use regular v brakes?
