  • makes me think it's the better option to just buy a whole CX chainset

    It's often the best way if you want OE rings, the chainset is sold at a huge discount but the replacement rings not so much, and the RRP for a chainset is already about half the RRP of its constituent parts bought as spares. Complete 6800 46/36 is £122-£138 depending on crank length, that's like buying the chainrings and bolts and getting the cranks thrown in for free. Leonard Zinn says it's OK, even if Shimano don't :)

  • Anyone know a decent app I can work out a bike route on my computer, then access that route on my phone and have it give me instructions over my headphones as I ride?

    Google Maps used to be able to do that, but then Google decided fuck yo predetermined route we know better and just changes it. And also keeps losing GPS signal but continues directing you anyway despite having no idea where you are.

    Happy to pay reasonably cash moneys. Would rather not have to dick around with transferring files from computer to phone.

  • Hi there, I'm quite confused about what brake adaptions I'll need. Attached is the brakes and the brake mounts I've got. So I'll be going from 160 which is what these forks and dropouts are designed for to 180 if I use post mount to IS brake mounts.

    I've attached photos could you let me know what I need and where I could purchase them.

    I've tried figuring out from the hope website but can be sure comparing it to what shops are saying.

    What sort of handlebars are involved here?

  • ↑This. I was obviously being too subtle last week when I pointed out how much of a PITA it was likely to become trying to cobble together that unlikely mix of vintage parts, and @seafish failed to infer what I was implying- put the Hope caliper in a museum where it belongs and start again.

  • I am coming to the conclusion that taking my Wolverine and fat tyres with me is the most logical and economic way to keep my prep up for the upcoming 160k gravel even in mid March, during my month long January trip to rural Germany, where I'd otherwise need to find a gym with spin classes and/or costly bike rental.

    Am I mad/deluded? My wife seems to think so.

  • Thought about buying an older rigid mtb in Germany and selling it again/leaving it after the month? Maybe not ideal, but probs cheaper

  • Oh, it won't cost extra. Airline have a 30kg luggage allowance and we have a toddler on a full ticket. It's more about the cumbersome bike pod and my wife shaking her head at me.

    In the early 90s I came back from UK (to Canada) with a new frame in tow. My wife remembers her head shakes sharply, my memories of them are a little more hazy.

  • So I want to get a turbo trainer. The bike I'd use it on has an 8-speed campag groupset with a nice wheel on it, I have a cheap wheel with a 10-speed shimano freehub on it that I could chuck an old tyre on. Will that work together? Obviously not going to be changing gear, the chain just needs to sit on one cog and spin the wheel as I pedal and not skip or fuck the chain up.

  • Will that work together?

    You may have an issue with 8-speed chain not fitting between 10-speed sprockets, and conversely if you switch to 10-speed chain it might not play nicely with 8-speed sprockets. If it's a beater wheel you're not going to use for anything else, a singlespeed conversion (e.g. https://www.tartybikes.co.uk/single_speed_kits/trialtech_single_speed_spacer_kit/c511p10341.html + https://www.tartybikes.co.uk/splined_sprockets/gusset_1er_sprocket/c28p418.html) might be the best plan. I can recommend trainer specific tyres, I use the Conti but I doubt that the Tacx or Vittoria options are much different.

  • cheers. Yeah it's a wheel that's just collecting dust, doesn't have a cassette on it right now but I have some old 10-speed cassettes in the shed. I've got 10+ old tyres hanging up which I have no use for so I'll probably work my way through those before I buy something specific.

    If they're low-end Shimano, you might be able to re-order the stack of sprockets and spacers to create ample room for 8-speed chain
