  • You shouldn't need to apply carbon grease on the steerer tho.

  • Righto, good to know! Cheers Ed!

  • Is carbon paste generally only for carbon on carbon then?

No. Any clamping interface with carbon. Allows you to better manage the clamp pressure but retain the same grip. I use it on steerer / stem interface regardless of stem material.

    (I have no crabon stems :( )

  • So I should use it? Any particular brand to go for/avoid?

  • tester recommended is tacx iirc

  • . Is carbon paste generally only for carbon on carbon then? Wouldn't be any benefit here?

It works for metal on carbon too, but it's unlikely to help much in your situation.

I like to torque down the headset preload screw to about 5Nm after securing the stem clamp, it seems to reduce the possibility of the preload screw loosening by precession which in turn stops the stem from walking up the steerer.

  • Cheers Tester, I'll give that a try :)

  • Does anywhere sell the plastic mounting clips for SKS Raceblades?
(the whole assembly, not just the rubber strap)

  • I popped my forks out to cut the steerer and now there's too wide a gap between fork crown and frame. I've obviously put something together in the wrong order. Does this look obviously wrong to anyone?

  • Top and bottom race bearings may not be the same size?

  • Is that a cartridge bearing that has come apart?

  • Here's another pic of what's going on.

  • Looks like a cartridge bearing that has come apart, see if you can stick the bearing back together, I guess the other bit is in the frame, or get new bearings.

  • You're right... Other bit is stuck in the frame with a touch of corrosion. That's annoying. This frame and headset is only three rides old. Mostly dry rides.

  • You can probably get it back together and full of lovely new grease.

  • aren't the bearings the wrong way around? i.e. cartridge should point up instead of down

  • In. Fitting correctly. Bulging with new grease. Thanks all. Was just having a senior moment.

  • Just a thought: I've gotten grease all on the steerer. Doesn't grease kill carbon? Best way to get it off? I've wiped with a dry rag but it's still going to have residue.

  • That doesn't look right.

It look like the fork have an integrated crown already with the metal crown race installed on top and an upside down exposed cartridge bearing.

Who's the fuck is your mechanic?

  • Grease doesn't kill carbon.

Grease kill disc brake pads however.

  • I'm my mechanic, @edscoble. It wasn't right but I think it is now. The cartridge went back together nicely and had an obvious orientation. Fork is now sitting just shy of frame and turning nicely. Think it's back to correct. And steerer is looking nice, with new stem also.

  • It's OK, I sorted it.

  • Voila...
