At Manchester Piccadilly there are 14 platforms of which only 2 are on through lines.
There are only 4 lines for most of Piccadilly's approach.
At Ardwick, the lines from Stalybridge (for Sheffield) and Glossop merge together then join the main lines on the east (Platform 1) side.
Further south, the 2 South Manchester (aka Airport) lines join on the West side.
Airport to York trains have to cross from the West to the middle, swap ends at Piccadilly, then take Ardwick junction.
Stockport services (inc Macclesfield, Crewe, Knutsford, Bolton) take any platform between 3 and 11.
Platforms 1-10 can hold 3 services using Northern Rail's stock, but Pendolinos can only use the middle platforms.
Here's a live view of what's occupying each track segment, there isn't much leeway for a service to be delayed without it cascading.

Arm warmers, they all look the same and cost the same.
Which do I want for weather at around 10 °C ? -

Because of the German Railway (Deutsche Bahn) quite likely being the main reason.
Imaging if British Railway still exist alongside private rail company.

Near constant engineering works, signal and track failures.
Plus most tracks are running very close to capacity, so it only takes one small incident to cause major knock on effects as trains get delayed, retimed, etc and the platforms have to shuffle around to accommodate them.
Most of the time trains are consistent, except when they're not.
Well. German train stations tend to have far more platforms than the equivalent British station. For instance, where a British station has four or six, a German station will probably have 10+. While that makes it easier to assign platforms, you also have to remember that in Germany platforms are changed around from the announced one a lot of the time if trains are late. Also, Germany's railways were built much later than Britain's Victorian railways and so planners already had a much clearer idea of the potential of railways and over-planned. Lots of other reasons, I'm sure.

Also zee Germans own a fair whack of our railways along with le French and probably some other forrins. I blame brown forrins, because they're the bad ones.

It's difficult to make a precise comparison, but on the face of it Indian Railways' profitable freight division subsidises the passenger operation to the tune of about 0.4p per passenger mile, while UK passenger rail operators get about 6p per passenger mile from the tax payer. Maybe we need to let the brown forrins run our railways.

Anyone have links to old photos with cycling trousers? Specifically the trad men's trousers cropped with elastic?
I can't remember where the pic I had went and I want to mod some spare pairs for errands.
I think the pic I had was a mechanic outside a shop....

Plus-twos are a little less insane.

I have a pair bought on a whim many years ago to spare...

I think it's the plus-two style I'm thinking of. I always roll trousers to just below the knee, so they don't bunch on the knee bend but stay clear of the bike. Let's see your old pair then @withered_preacher

So much easier to keep asking here than open new threads so....
Anyone know about an a-head style stem that can work on these stems?
I want to test bullhorn/drop setups on the folder. I love the convenience, hate the twitchy steering. I fancy a bit of reach and so on.
Alternative is to stack some steerer/stem extenders, but that's asking for dental work I think.

I managed to bend my rear wheel out of true in yesterdays drunken escapades.
I'm about to race an alleycat on that bike. Will I die?
It still turns fine, it just has one section where its out of true. maybe 5mm or so. -

Spray painted (rattle can) a rack. How long before it is properly cured/hard? Do I put clear coat on before that time or wait till cured?
Currently feels like warm butter under the nail test after a week of hanging in the shed.

my need a bit more dry heat than that, I'd hang it in the kitchen for 24 hrs, then it should be fine to spray a laquer on.

I've ordered something from the US. Less than $50. Nothing dodgy.
As it hadn't arrived in the specified time I contacted the seller, who says they can see from the tracking number that it arrived with UK customs on Oct 15th. The parcel was sent 'tracked', and says' delivered in UK' but I guess that could mean to customs.
I have had no contact to say I owe money.
Anyone got a contact email/number of someone I can speak to at customs? Or anyone had any similar issues?
It is both so ancient that it pre-dates IS2000, and so prescient that it prefigures flat-mount
